As Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continues its run in theaters, fans are already eagerly anticipating the final installment in the Miles Morales-centered trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. With speculation running rampant about everything from Miguel O'Hara's motives to the film's runtime, the filmmakers behind the trilogy have their work cut out for them in dispelling rumors.
At the end of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles finds himself stranded in a universe that isn't his own, while Gwen Stacy leads a group of Spider-People on a mission to rescue him and bring him back to his own world. While the overall direction of the story is clear, it remains to be seen what kind of obstacles Miguel O'Hara and the Spot will throw in Miles and his allies' path in Beyond the Spider-Verse. As is typical with superhero films, the lack of concrete details provides the perfect breeding ground for fan theories and speculation.
There have been rumors circulating about the runtime of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. According to @SpiderMan3news on Twitter, the podcast The Cosmic Circle claimed that Beyond the Spider-Verse will be even longer than its predecessor, Across the Spider-Verse. However, Christopher Miller, who wrote and produced both films, responded to the tweet by stating that the final length will be determined by what works best for the story, with no specific intentions for length. Miller's clarification was met with support from users on Twitter, with many praising his willingness to address unfounded claims and prioritize quality over quantity.
Miller's response regarding the runtime of Beyond the Spider-Verse does not necessarily indicate that it will be shorter than Across the Spider-Verse. While the latter film had a runtime of two hours and sixteen minutes, nearly forty minutes longer than its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it would be unlikely for Beyond the Spider-Verse to follow the same trajectory and have a nearly three-hour runtime in theaters. However, given the need to tie up loose ends and provide a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, it is possible that the movie will have a longer runtime than its predecessor. Unlike the first two movies, Beyond the Spider-Verse may not need to introduce new characters, but it will face the unique challenge of bidding farewell to all the Spider-Man characters introduced in the previous installments.
