Highlights

The revelation of Kraven in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 suggests the involvement of numerous supporting characters, including individuals affiliated with Doctor Octopus' makeshift Sinister Six.

In addition, the game sees the return of Martin Li, also known as Mr. Negative, offering the possibility of resolving the ongoing conflict between him and Miles Morales. This conflict stems from the profound impact Martin's actions had on Miles, resulting in the tragic demise of Miles' father.

Insomniac may choose to delay the meeting between Peter and Otto Octavius at the Raft in order to focus on Miles' character development. The recent reveal of Kraven in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 hinted at the possibility of numerous side characters appearing in the game. The datapad briefly mentioned various characters situated in different parts of New York City, including Yuri Watanabe's Wraith. Although there may be additional minor villains in the game that weren't shown, it's worth noting that the datapad specifically mentions key members of Doctor Octopus' Sinister Six. One character that wasn't featured in these profiles was Martin Li, also known as Mr. Negative.

Mr. Negative Makes Miles Morales Unique

Martin Li, also known as Mr. Negative, played a pivotal role in the marketing of Marvel's Spider-Man and emerged as the primary antagonist until the predictable revelation of Otto Octavius' villainous nature. Martin was responsible for the tragic demise of Jefferson Davis, Miles Morales' father, which had a profound impact on Miles as evident during his attendance at the funeral. However, the aftermath of his father's passing has not been further explored or given significant attention. Moreover, the whereabouts of Martin himself have been quite unclear since the conclusion of Marvel's Spider-Man. Now that he has resurfaced, it raises the question of whether another villain will also emerge.

In Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Martin makes an unexpected comeback, as unveiled in the story trailer from SDCC 2023. However, he appears with a noticeably different appearance. Sporting an orange collared shirt, it suggests that he is still confined at the Raft. Another jailbreak, seemingly instigated by Yuri, has brought both Spider-Men to the scene to intervene, while the prison once again finds itself engulfed in flames.

Miles and Martin are set to have a face-to-face encounter, providing closure for both characters. Martin appears to have transformed into a reformed individual, posing an intriguing challenge for Miles as he grapples with his own inner struggles. The question of how Martin's abilities can be restrained, preventing him from escaping, remains unanswered. Nevertheless, this restraint may indicate his desire to be a better person following the events of Marvel's Spider-Man. Martin's inclusion adds a unique aspect to Miles' character, and it will be captivating to witness the outcome of their conversation. If Insomniac is revisiting significant dynamics from the original game by reuniting Peter and Otto, it would not be surprising.

Doctor Octopus is Sure to Be Accounted for in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Otto played a crucial role in Peter's character development in Marvel's Spider-Man as both a mentor and employer. Peter's devastation over Otto turning into a villain was intense, especially with the epilogue hinting at future importance. While it may not be ideal to make Otto a villain again so quickly in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, it would make sense for Peter and Otto to cross paths just like Miles and Martin will, since they will already be at the Raft. However, Insomniac may decide to save this moment for another time to highlight Miles' storyline. Nevertheless, if Otto is not acknowledged or hinted at during their time at the Raft, it will feel like a missed opportunity. It is possible that the chaos could lead to Otto escaping with other inmates, setting up his return as a boss in a future installment. Given all of Peter's current concerns in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, introducing an encounter with Otto might just overwhelm him with unnecessary baggage at the moment.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on October 20, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
