While the PlayStation Showcase didn't quite live up to fan expectations in terms of non-stop announcements, it did have some exciting reveals, with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 gameplay trailer being one of them. Finally showcasing gameplay, the upcoming title appears to be making significant improvements from its predecessors, such as a larger New York City, more traversal options, and the iconic Symbiote suit being confirmed.
However, the gameplay trailer mostly focused on a mission involving the Lizard and evading Kraven the Hunter and his henchmen, leaving many fans with more questions than answers regarding the game's storyline. Some even wonder if Peter Parker could end up being Insomniac's version of Venom.
Peter Parker Could Become Marvel's Spider-Man 2's Venom
Marvel's Spider-Man 2's initial announcement trailer, released a few years ago, featured the two Spider-Men battling against several henchmen before joining forces to stare down a dimly lit alleyway. As Kraven the Hunter's voiceover discussed finding the ideal prey, the camera journeyed further into the dark alleyway, ultimately revealing Venom's unmistakable face for a brief moment. For almost two years, this brief trailer was the only information available to fans, resulting in numerous theories about the game's possible plot.
Even though Insomniac had not confirmed Venom's identity or role in the story, many fans assumed that Harry Osborn would become this universe's Venom. At the conclusion of both Spider-Man 2018 and Miles Morales, Harry Osborn is seen suspended in a tank filled with green liquid and some kind of black ooze. This black ooze envelops Harry's body and appears to move independently, resembling and behaving like a Symbiote. Because black Symbiotes are frequently connected with Venom in the Spider-Man comics, animated series, and prior films, fans naturally assumed that Harry would be the host for Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
But the first gameplay trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 complicates the theory that Harry Osborn will become Venom. Right away, we see Peter Parker using the Symbiote suit to unleash brutal attacks on Kraven the Hunter's henchmen. Although we don't know exactly where this mission fits into the game's story, it seems likely that it's early on and that this is the first time Peter has worn the suit in front of others. In the trailer, Miles questions its appearance, suggesting that he hasn't seen it before. Peter also mentions that they need to find the Lizard because Dr. Connors is the only one who can cure Harry. Based on these details, it's possible that Peter has already come into contact with Harry and that the Symbiote on Harry has transferred to Peter.
If this is the case, then the idea that Harry will become Venom may be a red herring. Insomniac may be planning a more unique version of the character. It's possible that Peter will lose himself completely to the Venom Symbiote in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, exhibiting increased aggression and less regard for human life. This version of Peter could end up being the final villain of the game, forcing Miles to face off against him.
