Spider-Man 2's fast travel system allows players to instantly transport themselves to any location, providing a near-seamless experience.
The brief pause between choosing a spawn point and Spidey's arrival is not a loading bar, but rather a confirmation bar to allow players to confirm their selection. The developers have placed emphasis on making the game accessible to players, even if it means sacrificing immediate and instant fast travel. Their dedication is evident in their focus on ensuring players can confidently confirm their choices.
A developer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has addressed a common question about the game's fast-travel feature. Insomniac's Spider-Man games have been commended for their seamless web-swinging and parkour traversal, allowing players to effortlessly navigate New York City, similar to the beloved superhero. However, to accommodate players who prefer not to swing across the city, Insomniac has included a fast-travel option in all three Spider-Man titles.
In contrast to Marvel's Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which had longer load times on the older PlayStation 4 console, Spider-Man 2 offers a different approach to fast travel. In the previous games, players would select a fast-travel spot on the in-game map and watch a humorous animation of either Peter or Miles riding the New York subway in their superhero attire. However, in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, players can instantly transport themselves to any location, significantly reducing travel time.
Many early viewers of Spider-Man 2 have praised Insomniac for their implementation of a nearly seamless fast-travel system. However, some have pointed out that there is still a slight delay between when the player selects their desired spawn point and when Spidey actually arrives at that location. When this issue was discussed on a Resetera forum, Mike Fitzgerald, Insomniac's director of core technologies, clarified that the progress bar that appears during fast-travel is not a loading bar, but rather a confirmation of the player's choice.
Fitzgerald had considered removing the "hold-to-confirm" bar to prevent confusion, but ultimately decided to keep it to ensure accessibility for all players in Spider-Man 2. The map user may unintentionally fast-travel or change their mind while the indicator is filling, so confirming choices properly is a priority for Fitzgerald and his team at Insomniac. While it takes about three or four seconds to hold down the button and confirm fast-travel, the game is still praised for its ability to quickly transport Peter Parker and Miles Morales throughout the large open world. Spider-Man 2 showcases the capabilities of the PlayStation 5's advanced hardware, and fans can experience its seamless fast travel starting this Friday.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 releases on October 20, exclusively for PS5.
