Spain's top forward, Jennifer Hermoso, appeared in a Madrid court on Tuesday to give testimony regarding an unwelcome kiss from the former soccer chief, Luis Rubiales, following the national team's win at the 2023 Women's World Cup. The incident, which occurred as the players received their medals and congratulations from prominent political and football figures, was broadcasted worldwide.
Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, was observed kissing Hermoso on the lips and then slapping her twice on the back, leading to immediate backlash in Spain and worldwide regarding consent. Despite Rubiales characterizing the kiss as "mutual," Hermoso has refuted the claim, stating that she did not give consent and was not treated with respect.
Rubiales stepped down as the federation's president in September after enduring weeks of pressure. Now, he could potentially face prosecution for his alleged actions. Investigating judge Francisco de Jorge is reviewing the evidence presented in court to decide whether the case should proceed to trial.
The national prosecution service of Spain released a statement following a closed court hearing on Tuesday, stating that Hermoso "confirmed what she had previously stated to prosecutors."
"The unexpected kiss was not consensual at any point. After this incident, the victim experienced harassment by those under investigation, both during the flight back to Spain and while staying in Ibiza, which disrupted her normal life and caused feelings of unease and sadness," the statement read.
Hermoso spoke to reporters outside the court, expressing her hope for the case to continue smoothly. "I appreciate the support you've given me, and I hope everything goes well for you," she said.

Spain national womens players in new impasse with federation as dispute intensifies
Rubiales is facing two charges, one for alleged sexual assault and another for alleged coercion. He is accused of pressuring Hermoso to claim that the kiss was consensual. Additionally, three other men, including the former women's team coach and two other federation officials, are each facing a charge of alleged coercion. This information was confirmed by a prosecutor at the national court in December during an interview with CNN.
The accused, including Rubiales, have all denied the charges in previous testimonies before the judge in recent months, according to statements from the court's prosecution service. Rubiales was banned by FIFA from "all football-related activities" for three years in October, and he has stated his intentions to appeal the decision.
