Explosive Standoff: Spain Women’s Squad Threatens Boycott until Federation President is Ousted

Spain Women's squad boycotts matches until federation president, Luis Rubiales, is ousted Dozens of players refuse to participate, demanding his removal from the position

Numerous members of the Women's team in Spain have announced their refusal to participate in any future matches for the country until Luis Rubiales is removed from his position. Rubiales, the controversial president of the national football federation, has faced widespread criticism for kissing midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the medal and trophy presentation after Spain's World Cup win. In a subsequent social media post, Hermoso expressed her discomfort with the gesture.

A joint statement, sent through their FUTPRO union, was signed by a total of 56 players, including Hermoso and all members of the victorious 23-player team, demanding the removal of the federation leadership. Despite widespread reports in the Spanish media on Thursday evening, Rubiales, instead of stepping down at the extraordinary general assembly of the Spanish federation (RFEF) on Friday, remained defiant.

The Spanish government is advocating for the suspension of Rubiales, aiming for it to become akin to the Spanish football's equivalent of the "Me Too" movement, which aims to raise awareness and prevent sexual violence against women. Further updates to come.
