Fans have eagerly awaited a sequel to Shaun of the Dead since 2004, and Simon Pegg has now provided an update on the possibility of the project.
Released in 2004, Shaun of the Dead quickly achieved cult status as a comedy classic. This zombie romantic comedy featured Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as the main characters, Shaun and Ed, who must navigate their way through a zombie apocalypse in London. The film's tremendous success led to the creation of the Cornetto Trilogy, which includes Hot Fuzz and The World's End. Collaborating with director Edgar Wright, Pegg co-wrote each script in the Cornetto Trilogy.
Shaun of the Dead's 20th anniversary is fast approaching, and despite the fans' continuous inquiries about a sequel, Pegg disappointingly confirms that it is not on his agenda. In a recent interview with The Guardian for Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, he firmly stated, "The last thing you need is Shaun of the Dead 2. It's done. Move on!"
Although there are no current plans for a sequel to Shaun of the Dead, Simon Pegg is not finished with writing. Since 2022, Pegg has been hinting at a new collaboration with Edgar Wright. While nothing has materialized yet, Pegg reveals that the duo has a few intriguing ideas to explore. However, progress has been slow due to Wright's dog distracting them during brainstorming sessions. Regardless, Pegg assures fans that whatever they create will not be a repetition of their previous work. Pegg expresses his desire to surprise and challenge expectations, stating, "I like the idea of pissing people off… We should just do something that no one's expecting."
Although Pegg and Wright have achieved success together, they have not collaborated since The World's End in 2013. Wright has worked on projects such as Baby Driver and Last Night in SoHo, while also developing a remake of the 1987 dystopian film The Running Man, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. On the other hand, Pegg has enjoyed numerous achievements, most notably reprising his role in the Mission Impossible franchise. Additionally, Star Trek fans recognize Pegg for his portrayal of the resourceful engineer, Scotty, aboard the Enterprise.
Shaun of the Dead is available on Amazon Prime Video.
