'Station 19' will conclude its run with a shortened seventh season in 2024, as announced by ABC Shonda Rhimes and Jaina Lee Ortiz share their reactions to the show's cancellation

Shonda Rhimes, the executive producer of Station 19, and star Jaina Lee Ortiz commented following ABC's announcement that the Grey's Anatomy spinoff will conclude with a 10-episode season 7. Rhimes expressed her gratitude for the incredible run on Instagram, thanking the exceptional cast and dedicated viewers for making it all possible. She reflected on the magic, moments, and memories created during the show's run. #station19.

Ortiz, in her role as firefighter Andy Herrera, reposted Rhimes' post on her Instagram Story and added, "Still processing this ... The love is so strong. Thank you, Shonda ♥️."

Boris Kodjoe, who plays fellow firefighter Robert Sullivan, suggested that he was staying positive despite the news. "Lots of fires left to fight. Back to business. #Season7," Kodjoe, 50, wrote alongside a photo of himself in costume on Friday.

Station 19, which was created by Stacy McKee, depicts the lives of a firefighter squad in Seattle close to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, the setting of Grey's Anatomy. Ben Warren (Jason George), a former doctor turned firefighter, is married to Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), the chief of the hospital. Additionally, firefighter Maya Bishop (Danielle Savre) is in a romantic relationship with obstetrician Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato). This show marked the second primetime spinoff of the medical drama, with the first being Private Practice, which aired for five seasons from 2007 to 2013.

The cancellation news came just a couple of days after the cast returned to set to start filming again after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes delayed production.

"After seven successful seasons, Station 19 has become a standout in ABC's lineup, thanks to the remarkable vision of Shonda and Betsy, beloved characters, and compelling storytelling," said Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, in a statement to Deadline on Friday. "With Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige leading the upcoming farewell season, we can look forward to a lot, especially the celebration of the show's milestone 100th episode."

Earlier this year, Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige were announced as the new co-showrunners, taking over from Krista Vernoff. Paige is also dealing with Freeform's cancellation of Good Trouble, a drama he created and which ran for five seasons.

Paige shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, December 9, "Yesterday was quite surreal: #Station19 ending and #GoodTrouble being cancelled. Not a great day - still trying to process the news. These shows (along with #TheFosters) have been my home and family for over a decade." He continued, "I've been fortunate to be surrounded by talented, kind people who truly believe in using the power of TV to improve the world. There are no words to express how these shows have impacted me and how grateful I am."

Paige expressed her love and gratitude to the casts, writers, crews, Shondaland, network supporters, and fans for making it all possible. She concluded by stating that despite her sadness, she is overwhelmingly grateful, considering themselves truly fortunate. Station 19 will conclude with a total of 105 episodes, with Season 7 premiering on ABC Thursday, March 14, at 10 p.m. ET.
