Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey's Anatomy, discusses the necessity of killing off Patrick Dempsey's character, Derek Shepherd. Despite his significant role in the show and his long-standing love story with Ellen Pompeo's character, Meredith Grey, Derek's unexpected death in a car accident shocked and devastated many viewers. Rhimes acknowledges that while the show had already experienced numerous deaths, Dempsey's character's demise was particularly heart-wrenching. In her Masterclass, recorded prior to the writers' strike, Rhimes explains the reasons behind this decision and also touches on the departure of Sandra Oh's character, Christina Yang, with a more positive narrative. Despite Oh's character also being adored by fans, she was given a happier ending in Grey's Anatomy. Rhimes' full statement can be read below.
Why Patrick Dempsey Left Grey’s Anatomy
Derek Shepherd cannot simply walk away from Meredith Grey and abandon his wife and children. Doing so would forever brand him as a heartless individual. Therefore, in terms of the story, his demise becomes a necessary, albeit painful, narrative choice that truly embodies the essence of these two characters. If Derek is truly the man we have portrayed him to be, he would not choose to leave; his only plausible exit would be through death. While Shonda Rhimes provided a compelling narrative justification for Derek's death in Season 11 of Grey's Anatomy, his exit from the show was surrounded by controversy. Despite still being under contract for an additional two years, extending until Season 12, Dempsey's character was unexpectedly written off. This decision sparked rumors of behind-the-scenes conflicts involving the actor. Allegedly, tensions between Dempsey and Rhimes reached a breaking point, ultimately leading to Derek's abrupt departure from Grey's Anatomy.
Dempsey clarified that the decision to leave Grey's Anatomy was not influenced by the rumors. He had been considering leaving the show for some time before it actually happened. There were no issues with his co-workers; his decision was based on personal reasons. He felt that being on a network show full-time was too time-consuming and left him with little time for his family.
Interestingly, former executive producers James D. Parriott and Jeannine Renshaw later revealed in their book, How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey's Anatomy, that there was tension between Dempsey and Rhimes. However, it appears that this has been resolved, as Dempsey made a return in several episodes of Grey's Anatomy season 17 as part of Meredith's COVID-19 storyline.
