Game director Stig Asmussen, renowned for his contributions to God Of War and later EA's Star Wars Jedi games, has announced his departure from Respawn Entertainment to explore new opportunities, according to Bloomberg. Asmussen's leadership played a pivotal role in the success of the single-player Star Wars Jedi titles, which not only received critical acclaim but also enjoyed commercial success.
An EA spokesperson confirmed Asmussen's decision, stating, "After careful consideration, Stig Asmussen has chosen to part ways with Respawn as he embarks on new adventures. We extend our best wishes to him." The spokesperson also mentioned that experienced leaders within Respawn will take on new responsibilities to continue their work on the upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Survivor title.
Jedi: Survivor, launched this April, continues to receive updates aiming to improve performance and enhance the overall gaming experience. Asmussen, the game's lead, revealed prior to its release that the team had proceeded with its development while considering the possibility of a sequel, and if Survivor proves successful, there may even be a third installment in the Jedi series. Although Asmussen may not be at the helm, the wider Star Wars: Jedi team could potentially continue with the creation of the third game.
Asmussen has openly discussed the challenges faced by Respawn Entertainment in bringing both Jedi games to fruition. These challenges include overcoming Lucasfilm's initial reservations about approving a game centered around a Jedi protagonist and EA's reluctance to support single-player games devoid of multiplayer features. Additionally, Asmussen shed light on how the development of Jedi: Survivor progressed at an accelerated pace compared to other AAA titles, even with the constraints of a pandemic-enforced work-from-home setup for the developers.
Asmussen's plans for the future after departing from Respawn remain undisclosed. Prior to his time at Respawn, he held roles at Santa Monica Studios, where he served as the lead environment artist and art director for the renowned God of War series. Eventually, he assumed the position of game director for God of War 3.
