A dedicated player's permadeath run in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor abruptly ended when the main character died mid-jump at a key moment in the game.
The player had invested significant effort in unlocking all of the main character's abilities before the unfortunate demise, which only added to the frustration.
Debate sparked in the comments regarding whether the fall should be considered a genuine death, but at the end of the day, the player's choice holds the most significance in a self-imposed permadeath challenge.
A Star Wars Jedi: Survivor player's impressive permadeath run came to a sudden and tragic end when a lowly Stormtrooper took them down. The second installment of Respawn's Star Wars Jedi series was recently released on current-gen consoles, continuing the story of former Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis as he evaded the Empire and searched for a new home with his allies. Jedi: Survivor received mostly positive reviews and it was recently announced that the game will be available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One after initially skipping those consoles. In the meantime, players who already have access to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have been exploring the game's Metroidvaina-style exploration and character customization options, finding their own unique ways to enjoy the game. Dedicated players have even taken on special permadeath playthroughs, meaning they must start over from the beginning if Cal dies. This is similar to the Nuzlocke rules followed by some Pokemon fans, where fainting Pokemon are considered dead and must be released from the party.
One player, known as GOODGAME_ETHAN, recently faced a sudden end to his playthrough of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. During a jump, Cal appeared to be killed by a Stormtrooper, halting the progress of the game. This incident occurred while Cal was preparing to confront Dagan Gera, a fallen Jedi, at the Koboh Observatory, around the middle of the game. GOODGAME_ETHAN had put considerable effort into unlocking all of Cal's special abilities during the initial stages of the game on Coruscant, playing on the highest difficulty. A clip capturing GOODGAME_ETHAN's unfortunate moment can be found on r/StarWarsJediSurvivor.
However, a debate arose in the comments section of GOODGAME_ETHAN's post regarding whether the fall should be considered a true death. Some users argued that since Cal only suffered fall damage instead of dying outright, it should not count, and GOODGAME_ETHAN could have continued his playthrough. On the other hand, some argue that Cal does technically respawn, making it a death. Regardless, GOODGAME_ETHAN personally considers it to be a death and noted that in most video games, such a fall would have certainly resulted in loss of progress.
While many Reddit users disagree with GOODGAME_ETHAN's decision to consider Cal's fall as a definitive death, it is important to remember that this was a voluntary permadeath challenge. Therefore, determining what qualifies as a "game over" is ultimately at the discretion of the player. Nevertheless, engaging in permadeath runs in games such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor can add excitement to a second playthrough, particularly while eagerly anticipating the sequel. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is currently accessible on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
