Lucrecia Martel, a potential director for Black Widow, recently expressed her strong dislike for a certain aspect of Marvel movies. Released in 2021, Black Widow faced multiple delays by Disney due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The story revolves around Natasha Romanoff, portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, as she confronts her troubled past amidst a conspiracy. Joined by Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour as Natasha's family, the ensemble cast brought the narrative to life. Despite grossing $379 million worldwide, the film received significant criticism, particularly regarding its screenplay and visual effects.
Argentine director Martel is the latest addition to the group of Black Widow movie critics and Marvel. In a recent interview with The Film Stage, Martel revealed that although she nearly joined the film, she never actually watched it. Instead, she watched most of the company's films whenever they were available on the planes she traveled in. Martel specifically criticizes the sound in these movies as the main reason she dislikes the genre. "It's the choice of sounds that they use for the effects, which is truly unpleasant," she stated, "and the way they incorporate music is genuinely terrible."
In 2018, the director of Zama shared her encounter with the studio with the Daily Pioneer. Marvel Studios reached out to several female directors during the pre-production phase of Black Widow to determine who would lead the film. However, the studio's assurance that they would handle the action scenes turned Martel off from accepting the offer. Martel explains that the offer was not enticing as she desired the freedom to manage the movie according to her own vision, which ultimately prevented the relationship from progressing beyond the initial meeting.
Superhero films have faced criticism throughout history, not only from audiences but particularly from other filmmakers who regard the genre as lacking value or not qualifying as "real cinema". This critique often arises due to the genre's heavy reliance on CGI and visual effects to bring action sequences, heroes, and villains to life, as well as its tendency to offer shorter scenes and limited character exploration, which may contrast with the more profound analysis found in certain independent or indie films. These comments commonly originate from filmmakers who lack a connection to superhero companies like Marvel.
Several directors, including Martin Scorsese, have openly expressed their disconnection from Marvel and its storytelling techniques. Scorsese famously stated that he sees superhero movies more as theme parks rather than cinema, and admitted his inability to enjoy watching such films. Since then, there has been a growing discussion in popular culture about the worth and authenticity of the genre.
