Shania Twain has forgiven her ex-husband, Robert “Mutt” Lange, for his affair, but she still remembers what happened. During a recent episode of the “Great Company With Jamie Laing” podcast, the 58-year-old singer shared how she coped with Lange's infidelity with her friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Twain and Lange got married in 1993 before divorcing in 2010.
"Forgiveness is like releasing a burden," Twain said. "But for me, it doesn't necessarily mean forgetting. It's about trying to understand the other person, even if they were wrong. You might always believe that what they did was wrong."
Twain clarified that despite the difficulties, she doesn't harbor any hatred towards her ex, with whom she has a 22-year-old son named Eja. "It was his mistake, not mine," she said. "I feel sorry for him that he has to live with such a big mistake. I may not know what it is, but it's not something I have to carry."
Twain and the producer used to be a prominent couple in the music industry until their marriage fell apart in 2008. Despite denying affair rumors, Lange and Thiébaud began a relationship after the scandal.

During an interview in 2011 with Ellen DeGeneres, Shania Twain shared that Marie-Anne's husband at the time, Frédéric Thiébaud, was the one who informed her about the infidelity. Twain admitted, "I didn't believe him and thought he was just making it up. I was clearly in denial."
Twain and Frédéric’s friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship after going through a tough time together. The “Come on Over” singer shared with DeGeneres that they started off as good friends and spent months supporting each other emotionally. Even though it was a challenging period, they found strength in each other. Twain acknowledged that Frédéric was a pillar of support during that time and they eventually discovered something beautiful and unexpected.
After getting engaged in 2010, Twain and Frédéric tied the knot the following year. Reflecting on the past over a decade later, Twain expressed gratitude for the tough experience that ultimately led her to finding love with Frédéric.
Twain shared on the “Armchair Expert” podcast in February 2023 that he and Mutt co-parent effectively despite not communicating much verbally. They prefer to text each other instead. Both parents prioritize their son and work together to provide him with a loving environment. Twain believes in giving people what they deserve, and he feels fortunate to have Mutt as his co-parent, calling him the greatest man on the planet.
