Ryan Reynolds wasted no time in openly mocking SAG-AFTRA's newly unveiled stringent Halloween costume rules amidst their ongoing 100-day strike.
The strike originated as a response to the WGA Strike, spanning from May to September, in which both actors and writers advocated for improved working conditions and compensation. While the writer's strike concluded a month ago, SAG-AFTRA's strike remains ongoing.
As a result of this strike, strict regulations have been imposed regarding the actions actors are permitted to take, including their choices for Halloween costumes. Notably, Ryan Reynolds joined the minority of actors who openly ridiculed SAG-AFTRA's strike guidelines during this chilling period.
Reynolds’ joke pushes back against SAG-AFTRA Halloween rules
According to The Hollywood Reporter, SAG-AFTRA sent out their guidelines around what their actors could wear as Halloween costumes.
The union advised its members to select costumes featuring general characters and figures such as ghosts, zombies, and spiders. They also cautioned against sharing photos of costumes inspired by controversial content on social media. Consequently, actors would be prevented from dressing up as characters from Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Netflix’s Wednesday, which happen to be among the top costume choices for 2023.
Reynolds, in his characteristic humorous style, turned to Twitter to humorously vent his frustrations about these regulations. "I can't wait to playfully shout 'scab' at my 8-year-old all night," he tweeted, "She may not be a part of the union but she still needs to understand."
Reynolds was not the sole famous individual who expressed dissatisfaction with SAG-AFTRA's apparently stringent Halloween attire guidelines.
Mandy Moore shared an article about the memo on her Instagram story, adding the caption, "Is this a jest? Seriously @sagaftra. Is this the priority? We urge you to negotiate in a fair and sincere manner on our behalf. Numerous individuals from every facet of this industry have made significant sacrifices for months. Return to the bargaining table and reach a just agreement, enabling everyone to resume work. Please and thank you."
SAG-AFTRA leadership did meet with several studio executives in early October, but a deal was still not brokered between the two.
The union's Halloween guidelines, although strict, serve a purpose: to avoid endorsing any media involved in the strike, which could undermine their overall goal of striking. To stay updated with the latest TV and movie news, visit our page here.
