Ryan Reynolds has discussed his difficulties in managing his mental well-being in a recent interview with Page Six. The 46-year-old Deadpool actor admitted that he is not always successful in maintaining his mental equilibrium and sometimes finds himself feeling overwhelmed.
Reynolds admits to struggling with maintaining a proper balance in his life, but he discloses that he employs certain personal rituals to keep himself rooted.
During times when he feels overwhelmed, Reynolds tends to fill his schedule excessively. However, he acknowledges this tendency and takes measures to handle it as effectively as possible.
The actor has previously shared insights into his battle with mental health. In an interview with CBS' Sunday Morning in 2022, he openly discussed experiencing anxiety throughout his entire life. He further revealed that during such episodes, a distinct aspect of his personality takes control.
Reynolds recalled feeling especially nervous before an appearance on Late Night With David Letterman, on which he appeared several times before the host signed off in 2015.
During a CBS interview, Ryan Reynolds shared his experience of feeling extreme anxiety before going on stage, recalling the fear of potential disaster and the urge to vomit.
Once Reynolds takes center stage, everything undergoes a transformation.
"When that curtain opens, and this is a recurring pattern in my career, there's a shift where this alter ego emerges," reminisced the celebrated star of Just Friends. "It's like this inner voice takes control and reassures me, saying, 'You've got this. You're in your element.' My heart rate decreases, my breathing steadies, and it's like I become a completely different person. After the interview ends, I find myself wishing I could always be that confident version of myself."
In June 2021, the actor, who is the father of daughters James, 8, Inez, 7, Betty, 4, and a newborn child born in February with Blake Lively, shared that his children played a crucial role in encouraging him to openly address his mental health issues for the first time.
Reynolds explained to Entertainment Tonight that as a parent, he believes it is important to lead by example and demonstrate to his daughters how to cope with emotions such as sadness, anxiety, and anger. By doing so, he hopes to break the stigma surrounding mental health and start a dialogue about it. Reynolds shared that during his lowest moments, he often felt isolated in his struggles, so speaking out about it can help others feel less alone and find their own sense of liberation.
