The Wrexham football club is being compared to the Rocky movie franchise for season 3 by cochairmen Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

In the Welcome to Wrexham season 3 trailer, released on Friday, April 19, McElhenney, 47, referenced Sylvester Stallone's Rocky films to explain the team's progress.

In the second season of Welcome to Wrexham, Reynolds and McElhenney worked to help Wrexham AFC get promoted to the English Football League. The season 2 finale, which aired in November 2023, saw the team successfully promoted to the EFL’s League Two after 15 years.

Moving forward to season 3, McElhenney expressed, “Now, here we are in season 3.” Reynolds, aged 43, chimed in, “It’s going to be a very intense and thrilling season.”

The entire trailer featured the song “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, a nod to the Rocky film franchise. While Sylvester Stallone, 77, may not be attending a Wrexham game anytime soon, other famous friends like Hugh Jackman and Chris Pratt make cameos in the season.

Pratt was eager to meet Ryan Reynolds and asked McElhenney if he would get the chance. He also inquired about Danny Devito, who McElhenney works with on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

In Friday's trailer, there is a scene where Wrexham's top player, Paul Mullin, gets injured on the field and is taken away in an ambulance. This seems to be just one of the challenges the team will face this season.

Reynolds mentioned, "Many thought they would see a documentary about us transforming Wrexham, but I believe it's more about Wrexham transforming others."

The season 3 trailer of Welcome to Wrexham was released shortly after the conclusion of the team's 2023-2024 season. Wrexham AFC achieved a remarkable victory of 6-0 against the Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, April 13, leading to their promotion to the EFL's League One.

Reynolds took to Instagram to express his emotions, stating, "A few years ago, I would never have imagined shedding tears of joy over a football match in North Wales. Congratulations to Wrexham AFC and my fellow co-chairman, @robmcelhenney. Let's double up the town! This journey is the thrill of our lives."

Welcome to Wrexham premieres via FX on Thursday, May 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, with episodes streaming the following day on Hulu.
