Russell Wilson has decided to retire as a Denver Bronco after being released from the team before the start of the 2024 NFL season.
In a touching message shared on Monday, March 4, the 35-year-old Wilson expressed his gratitude to the fans of Broncos Country. He thanked them for welcoming him and his family with open arms over the past two years and making them feel like part of the Denver community.
The quarterback expressed his deep love for the city: "This place will always have a special spot in my heart. Our family has grown here, we have created many memories and friendships, and built relationships that will last a lifetime."
Wilson, who is married to Ciara, also showed appreciation for his teammates by thanking them for "fighting alongside each other and being there through thick and thin."
He mentioned a few standout players on the Broncos, like wide receiver Brandon Johnson, whom he praised for his hard work ethic.
Wilson also gave a shoutout to the unsung heroes behind the scenes, like Wendy and Brandy in the team’s cafeteria. He appreciated their daily efforts in serving good food and playing great music that uplifts everyone.
The athlete mentioned that his pastor Ray Jackson had also contributed to his football success, expressing gratitude for his numerous prayers.
Wilson wrapped up on a positive note. "Hard times may come, but resilient individuals endure. I trust in God's plan for me and look forward to what lies ahead," he finished.
Wilson started his career with the Seattle Seahawks after being chosen as the third pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. He achieved a Super Bowl victory in February 2014 during his nearly 10-year tenure with the team.
In March 2022, the Broncos acquired Wilson through a trade and named him as their starting quarterback that autumn. The team's record was 4-11 in Wilson's first season, but improved to 7-8 in the 2023 season. Unfortunately, Wilson was benched in December 2023 for the remainder of the season.

After facing a career setback, Wilson expressed a hopeful outlook, tweeting, "God's got me. Looking forward to what's next."
The timing of the setback was challenging as it came shortly after Wilson and Ciara welcomed their third child, Amora. They also have a daughter, Sienna, 6, and a son, Win, 3. Ciara is also the mother of Future Jr., 9, from a previous relationship with ex Future.
Wilson will be officially released from the squad by the Broncos after the league year starts on Wednesday, March 13, as announced on Monday.
In a statement, general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton expressed their gratitude to Russell for his contributions and commitment to the team and community. They also wished him the best as he moves forward in his career.
The Broncos are focused on “building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond,” per their press release.
