Royal Family's Secret Censorship: Shocker Revelation on Meghan Markle's Line in Suits

Meghan Markle's departure from Suits was influenced by her relationship with Prince Harry Discover the intriguing connection that ultimately led to her exit from the popular TV series

Summary

Meghan Markle's relationship with Prince Harry affected her time on Suits, leading to her eventual exit from the show.

The royal family prevented Markle from pursuing one of her storylines on the show to avoid any potential misinterpretation. Markle found it challenging to balance the demands and scrutiny that accompanied her relationship with Prince Harry while also continuing to portray her character on Suits.

Suits creator Aaron Korsh reveals that Meghan Markle's involvement with the British royal family resulted in a line being blocked. The legal drama series, featuring an exceptional cast including Patrick Adams, Gabriel Macht, Rick Hoffman, Sarah Rafferty, and Markle as Rachel Zane, an ambitious paralegal, saw Markle's relationship with Prince Harry and the royal family impacting her time on the show. Eventually, Markle and Adams were written out at the end of Suits season 7.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter conducted in compliance with WGA guidelines during the writers strike, Korsh explains that while Markle was still part of the show, the royal family vetoed one of her lines due to discomfort and a desire to avoid misinterpretation. The line had to be altered, which left Korsh dissatisfied. Read his full comments below:

How Markle’s Relationship With Prince Harry Led To Her Eventual Exit From Suits

One particular line of dialogue that I remember was when my wife's family needed to discuss a sensitive topic, they would use the word "poppycock." For example, let's say you wanted to bring up something you knew your husband wouldn't want to do, but you just wanted to discuss it without holding him to anything he said. You would say, "It's poppycock." In an episode, Mike and Rachel (played by Markle) were going to have a similar situation. As a nod to my in-laws, we planned for her to say, "My family would say poppycock." However, the royal family didn't want her to use that word. Presumably, they were concerned that people might manipulate footage of her saying "cock." So, we had to change it to "bullshit" instead of "poppycock," and I wasn't pleased because I had already promised my in-laws that "poppycock" would be in the show.

Markle's rise to fame came with her role as Rachel Zane in the hit show Suits. Prior to that, she was relatively unknown, taking on minor roles in smaller productions. As her popularity grew, she utilized social media and even started her own lifestyle blog, The Tig. However, her relationship with Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, which began in 2016 but went public the following year, eventually started impacting her involvement in Suits.

The intentional and careful curation of the royal family's image meant that Markle had to make significant changes to her lifestyle. She had to adhere to specific protocols and limit her public activities to approved royal appearances. Eventually, she even had to shut down her blog. Markle wisely informed her Suits co-stars and the production team about her relationship with Prince Harry early on, allowing them enough time to wrap up her storyline before she retired from acting completely in 2018.

Although some may have been disappointed by Markle's departure from Suits, it was arguably the best decision for her. The scrutiny and demands that came with being in a relationship with the Duke of Sussex made it impossible for her to continue portraying Rachel Zane, particularly due to her onscreen romance with Adams' Mike. This situation also posed challenges for the show's writers, as they had to make compromises for Markle's character, as explained by Korsh. Despite her significant contributions to Suits, the writers managed to give her a fitting conclusion in the end.
