Prince William arrived in New York City on Monday, September 18, ahead of his participation in the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit at the Plaza Hotel. Upon his arrival, the 41-year-old prince wasted no time in immersing himself in various activities. On his inaugural day in the city, William paid a visit to Governors Island, where he had the pleasure of meeting volunteers from the Billion Oysters Project and engaging with students at the New York Harbor School. The unexpected presence of the prince brought immense joy and surprise to the students, as his visit had been kept under wraps until the eleventh hour.
The New York Harbor School, a public high school focused on preparing students for maritime careers, has joined forces with the Billion Oysters Project to replenish one billion live oysters in New York Harbor within the next two decades. Kynara, a student at the school, expressed her excitement to Town and Country about meeting William, stating, "We had no idea about [his visit] until it actually happened. It was absolutely surprising! Although attending a school like this, it's not uncommon."
William readily joined a group of volunteers as they ventured into the waist-deep waters of the New York Harbor to survey an oyster reef near Brooklyn Bridge Park. Additionally, he made a trip to an oyster hatchery and observed a collection of oyster shells on Governors Island, generously donated by restaurants in New York City to aid in the restoration of the oyster reefs.
Prince William, reflecting on his visit, shared through X, "The journey from restaurant to harbor is truly remarkable. The unwavering love for oysters among New Yorkers and the support shown to local restaurants have significantly contributed to the @BillionOyster Project's collection of over 2 million pounds of recycled shells so far."
William is the Founder and President of the Earthshot Prize. It was launched in 2020 to award leaders, innovators and activists who are aiming to repair the planet by 2030.
