The Conners season 6 does not require a large number of returning characters from Roseanne for its success, but there are a select few familiar faces that the sitcom spinoff could benefit from bringing back. With a long screen history, The Conners might finally be coming to an end with its upcoming sixth season. Originally, The Conners started as the popular ‘90s sitcom Roseanne, which lasted for nine seasons before being revived successfully in 2017. However, the series faced a setback when its star, Roseanne Barr, was fired for racist tweets, leading to the show killing off its title characters and transforming into The Conners.
While The Conners could continue portraying its working-class family for more seasons, both star John Goodman and executive producer Bruce Helford have hinted at the possibility of ending the series with season 6. This might be a good decision considering that Roseanne originally began in 1988. Despite the series being off the air for over a decade in between, the sitcom can still feel somewhat stale when focusing on characters who have been onscreen for decades. However, if The Conners season 6 marks the final chapter, there is a chance that a few supporting stars from Roseanne could make a guest appearance.
7 Bobo
Roseanne's spinoff should limit the number of characters returning from its predecessor, but a few cameos are necessary for proper closure of The Conners' storyline. However, Bobo is not included in that list. Bobo, a transient character who appeared in one episode of Roseanne's first season, was a rude barfly whom Dan punched when he insulted Roseanne's weight in an episode titled "Dan's Birthday Bash." Bobo was mostly forgotten by fans, but inexplicably returned in a season 5 episode of The Conners titled "Two More Years And A Stolen Rose." This suggests the possibility of his return in season 6.
Nevertheless, it would be wise for The Conners to refrain from bringing back Bobo in season 6. The highly anticipated guest appearance of Bobo in season 5 disappointed many viewers, as they either didn't remember his previous role or were hoping for a more substantial returning character. It was underwhelming for Bobo to be the sole character brought back, making his return in season 6 unnecessary. Thankfully, there is no compelling reason for his return in terms of the storyline. Unfortunately, this did not deter the spinoff from resurrecting Bobo in season 5.
6 Roseanne
Roseanne Barr's return in The Conners season 6 is highly improbable, considering her contentious departure from the series. Although there is a slim chance that she might make a cameo appearance in the show's final season, it would not be a wise decision. Barr recently received substantial attention for her stand-up comedy special in 2023 and was once the central figure of the show. However, due to various reasons, it is highly unlikely that Roseanne will rejoin The Conners for its sixth season, particularly considering the complex narrative acrobatics that would be necessary to justify her comeback.
5 Arnie
There is a possibility of Tom Arnold’s Roseanne character Arnie returning in season 6 as he was a close friend of Dan's. However, there is not much demand for this cameo since Arnie wasn't well-received by viewers during the original run of Roseanne. Despite Arnold's success in other comedic roles, his portrayal on Roseanne did not resonate with the show's fan base. Additionally, Dan had another friend who played a significantly larger role in Roseanne. As a result, bringing back Arnie in The Conners season 6 before Chuckie Mitchell would likely only irritate the audience.
4 Leon Carp
Leon Carp, the forgotten supporting star played by Martin Mull, should make a return in season 6 of The Conners. This would give viewers the opportunity to learn about the fate of this significant LGBTQ+ character. Despite being primarily ignored in Roseanne's disastrous ninth season, Carp played a significant role in earlier seasons of the show. As the strict boss of The Lunchbox, Leon stood out as a rare LGBTQ+ character whose sexual orientation was not used merely for comedic effect. While some of the jokes involving Leon in Roseanne may no longer resonate, his storyline was remarkably progressive for its time.
Interestingly, Carp, portrayed by Mull, was one of the first gay characters on a network television show to marry a member of the same sex. This groundbreaking development, which Roseanne rarely received credit for, makes it all the more important for The Conners to bring back this character for a long overdue cameo. Given that Roseanne's grandson Mark has come out as LGBTQ+ in The Conners, it would be fitting for him to meet his grandmother's old friend. Additionally, the fact that Jackie successfully took over The Lunchbox and turned it into a thriving business would only add to the comedic triumph of Leon's return.
3 Chuck Mitchell
2 DJ
: The Conners season 6 cannot afford to make the same cameo mistake as season 5. However, there are certain Roseanne characters that the final season of the sitcom absolutely needs to bring back. One of them is Chuck Mitchell, Dan's oldest friend, who must return soon following the spinoff's depiction of him in a desperate situation when his wife became ill. The last time Chuckie was seen, he was struggling to hold himself together, and it is only fair that Dan's best friend receives a more favorable outcome than this. Chuckie's storyline must have a proper resolution, especially if season 6 indeed turns out to be the show's final installment, as leaving him in such a sad and lonely state would not be an appropriate way to conclude.
DJ played a significant role in both Roseanne and The Conners until his sudden exit in season 5 of the spinoff. Therefore, despite having less to contribute upon his return, it is crucial for him to make a comeback before the show concludes. Without DJ's presence, his integral part in the Roseanne narrative would be abruptly cut short, particularly considering The Conners season 5 failed to provide a plausible explanation for his abrupt disappearance.
1 Bev
Bev, the mother of Roseanne and Jackie, should return in order to conclude her storyline that was left unresolved in season 5. In episode 8 of The Conners season 5, titled "Of Missing Minds and Fries," it was revealed that Bev was suffering from dementia and had very little memory of her own daughter Jackie. This created a potential major tragedy for season 6, as it appeared that Bev's passing was imminent. However, since no further resolution has been provided for this plotline, it is crucial for The Conners season 6 to bring back Bev and provide a fitting goodbye for this bittersweet storyline involving the character of Roseanne.
