Rosario Dawson and daughter Isabella have been inseparable since she welcomed her into the family as a preteen.

Dawson fulfilled her childhood dream of adopting a child in 2014 when she took in Isabella at the age of 11. Her lifelong aspiration to become a mother through adoption was motivated by her own family history, having discovered at the young age of 5 that her biological father was not her dad.

Recalling her early thoughts on the matter in a We interview in December 2018, Dawson shared, "Growing up in my neighborhood, I realized that I could have a single-parent household like some of my friends. I told my mom at 5 that I wanted to adopt when I was older, and that I wanted to adopt an older child."

When Dawson first met Isabella, she felt like her dream had finally come true. "I didn't go through an adoption center or anything like that," Dawson revealed in a February 2021 interview with Health magazine. "My family was acquainted with her biological mother, and when we learned that she was in foster care, we made it our mission to find her. It wasn't even a decision; it was obvious that she was meant to be my daughter."

Celebrating Milestones

As Isabella's sweet sixteen approached, Dawson thought about how much she valued sharing those significant moments with her daughter.

"She's about to have a sweet sixteen, so that's the birthday we're focused on at home - it's like there's no other birthday, this is the birthday," she told InStyle in February 2019. "I think there are times when you overlook birthdays, and I really want to make the most of the fact that turning 40 in my generation is different from how it was for my grandmother and my mother."

Questioning Mom’s Coolness

She went on to say: "I'm not sure if I'll be jumping from a helicopter or bungee jumping, but I want to be out there, celebrating and appreciating the time I get to share with my sweet 16 year old."

Dawson remembered the time when Isabella chose an outfit for her mother to wear to an Oscars after-party. When the actress decided not to go, Isabella was not impressed.

“I was all set to go, and then I just thought, ‘Do I really want to travel all the way across town?’ I changed into my pajamas and my daughter was like, ‘What's wrong with you?’” she told The Cut in April 2019. “She saw that picture of Madonna with Lady Gaga the next day. She said, ‘Your priorities are all messed up, mom. You should be hanging out with Madonna.’”
