Rob Lowe, 59, recently shared his excitement about the upcoming musical adaptation of his first movie, The Outsiders. He mentioned that he is looking forward to seeing it in the future. Lowe expressed his admiration for the project, stating that it is amazing and makes perfect sense. He hopes that the musical will turn out great.
"And remember to stay gold!" Lowe mentioned, making a reference to a famous line from both the 1983 film and the 1967 novel with the same title.
Lowe, who portrayed the character Sodapop Curtis in the movie, was just 18 years old when filming started in 1982. Prior to this role, he had only appeared in a few television shows, with The Outsiders marking his big screen debut. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the film also featured actors such as Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise.
"We were all young and still learning," Lowe shared with Us during the interview. "It was my first movie, and I had this idea that all movies were made like Francis Ford Coppola's, but I quickly learned that wasn't the case."
Reflecting on the project, Lowe fondly recalled the strong bond among the cast and crew. "The camaraderie on set was like being in a fraternity for me," he reminisced.
The musical, starting previews on Broadway on March 16, features a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine and music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival and Levine. Actor Jason Schmidt will make his Broadway debut as Lowe’s character, Sodapop.
The Outsiders also marked Lowe’s entry into the Brat Pack alongside Estevez, now 61, Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Molly Ringwald and more. During the 2024 awards season, Lowe was thrilled to support fellow Brat Pack member Robert Downey Jr., who won his first Oscar on Sunday for his role in Oppenheimer.

Lowe told Us that he wants to make sure his Santa Monica High School history classmate Robert Downey Jr. receives the recognition he deserves with some long-overdue awards. He believes that Downey Jr. deserves recognition for his work in a big movie that has made a significant impact in the entertainment industry. It is the type of movie that should be produced more frequently, as it has captured the attention of a wide audience and is receiving accolades.
Additionally, Lowe mentioned that he believes Downey Jr. and other nominees are likely relieved now that the Oscars have concluded. The end of award season means they can finally take a break from attending red carpet events and enjoy some time away from the spotlight.
"It's been a really long award season," Lowe said. "Everyone is just trying to make it to the end. I believe that while everyone wants to win, they are also excited about not having to dress up in a tuxedo every few days."
