Revolutionary Mechanic Persona in Persona 6: Exceeding All Expectations

Persona 5 Royal introduced numerous enhancements to the acclaimed Persona 5, and one standout addition deserves to become a staple in all future Persona titles

Persona 5 Royal, the upgraded version of Persona 5 released in 2018, improves upon the original game by incorporating various quality of life changes. The game follows the story of Joker, a high-school transfer student, who becomes embroiled in real-life politics and a supernatural conspiracy. Alongside his group, known as the Phantom Thieves, Joker rebels against corrupt adults and aims to restore order to society by stealing their hearts.

In addition to introducing new characters, soundtracks, and plot points, Persona 5 Royal enhances the combat system of Persona 5. Players collect, level up, and fuse Personas to engage in battles against other Personas and enemies. However, the standout feature of Persona 5 Royal is the inclusion of Persona Traits, which elevates the gameplay experience to new heights. This game-changing addition should be the standard in all future Persona games.

Persona Traits in Persona 5 Royal

Persona Traits are unique passive skills of Personas that do not use a skill slot. They can also be inherited by another Persona after fusion. If two Personas with the same Trait are fused, the original Trait will be carried over and sometimes bonus Traits can be obtained. Players are introduced to Traits after the first Palace, and from then on, every Persona in the game will have a Trait, including those in the player's party. The party's Persona Traits, like Makoto's Gaia Pact that boosts ailments, enhance synergy between party members.

These traits are highlighted in yellow next to a Persona's name. Persona traits are passive skills that have various effects on combat in Persona 5 Royal, making it more complex and engaging. At the beginning, players will come across Personas with simpler traits, like reducing SP cost of a specific elemental attack or increasing the effect of magic attacks. However, as the game progresses, more powerful traits can be found on Personas.

All Personas in the game possess a Persona trait, although not all of them are unique. However, both common and unique Persona traits can be inherited by a new Persona during fusion, adding a new layer to the Persona fusion and combat system. The inclusion of Persona traits allows for a wide range of customization options, making already powerful Personas even stronger. It is important to note that Persona traits only come into effect during battles and do not have any impact outside of them.

There are several highly beneficial Persona traits that players can take advantage of. For example, Savior Bloodline reduces the SP cost of healing abilities by half, Immunity decreases vulnerability to ailment effects, and Relentless increases damage dealt to weaknesses by 50%. Unique Persona traits, like Alice's "Just Die," completely eliminate the SP cost of instant-kill abilities, adding an extra element of enjoyment to gameplay. Persona 5 Royal introduced the concept of Persona traits, which seamlessly integrates with the combat mechanics of the Persona series. Therefore, Persona 6 and all future Persona games should definitely incorporate this mechanic.

Persona 5 Royal is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
