Last December, Nvidia released Portal with RTX, a free DLC for Portal owners. This update brought full ray tracing, new high-resolution physically based textures, and enhanced high-poly models to the game, which was originally released almost 16 years ago. These graphical improvements breathed new life into the game, bringing its visuals up to par with modern ray-traced titles. Nvidia accomplished this by utilizing their upcoming modding platform, Nvidia RTX Remix, which allows developers and modders to create enhancements for classic games.
Continuing with their use of the RTX Remix tool, Nvidia has now released Portal: Prelude RTX. This version of the game was also developed using the Remix tool. For those unfamiliar, Portal: Prelude is an unofficial prequel to Portal. It offers players an entirely new campaign lasting 8-10 hours, featuring 19 new test chambers, a fully voiced story with NPCs, and advanced gameplay mechanics. Created by Nicolas “NykO18” Grevet and others, it gained acclaim as the highest-rated Portal mod and was ranked the third overall Player’s Choice mod in 2008. It also won the 2008 Portal ModDB award. Valve later released the official sequel, Portal 2, in 2011, further cementing the franchise's popularity.
Portal: Prelude RTX is an enhanced version of the original mod/game that introduces updated visuals and advanced lighting technology. With the inclusion of full ray tracing or path tracing, DLSS 3, Nvidia Reflex, and Nvidia RTX IO, the game offers an immersive and visually stunning experience. Additionally, Nvidia has integrated a multitude of new upgraded materials and assets from David "Kralich" Driver-Gomm and Valerios "Fearell_Val" Tsoumpas. The game also features new voice acting by Jack "Amicus" McDade and Colin "SordidSpectacle" Zachariasen, along with gameplay enhancements from Nicolas.
Nvidia is set to introduce RTX IO, its latest technology, through Portal: Prelude RTX. This GPU-based loading and game asset decompression innovation aims to enhance load times and reduce CPU usage. According to Nvidia, RTX IO allows for quicker texture load times, resulting in minimal asset pop-in. Additionally, it reduces the size of texture packages by 44%, meaning that approximately 32GB of 4K textures will occupy just 18GB of storage space, all while maintaining detailed visuals. This advanced technology will also be incorporated into Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, scheduled for release on July 26.
