Respawn Entertainment recently provided an update on the possibility of Ranked Duos being added to Apex Legends. Currently, there are no plans for this mode. While the game does have a regular Duos option for players who prefer smaller squads, some were hoping for a more competitive version of the mode.
Duos was added to Apex Legends as a permanent mode back in April 2020, making it a significant feature of the battle royale for almost four years now. This mode allows players to team up in pairs, which has been well-received by the community. Switching from three-player squads to two-player squads makes it easier to find a premade group. Additionally, Duos is potentially more favorable for solo players as it increases the chances of engaging in 1v1 battles. While not every player focuses on Duos, some players have been advocating for a dedicated Ranked option to be introduced due to the benefits of playing in smaller teams.
Respawn Developer Comments on Ranked Duos
During a recent Reddit AMA, a user brought up the idea of adding a Ranked playlist for Duos to the game. Unfortunately, developer RSPN_Laker responded with the news that "Dedicated Ranked Duos is not currently in our plans." However, they did mention that they are open to feedback and requests from the community.

Many fans were disappointed by the latest developer update from Respawn. It's not the first time that Apex Legends developers have decided against making fan-requested modes permanent. For example, during Season 2, they introduced the popular Apex Solo LTM, which removed the team aspect from the game. Despite its popularity, the developers have stated that a permanent Solo mode goes against the team-based nature of Apex Legends.
apex-legends-crypto-ash-fuse-worlds-edge - Fortunately, the Ranked Duos omission from Apex Legends does not appear to be for the same reasons as Apex Solo, meaning it could be reconsidered in the future
The absence of Ranked Duos in Apex Legends may not be permanent like Apex Solo. The developers might consider bringing it back in the future. There could be a couple of reasons for this decision. It's possible that they see Trios as the core experience of the game and want to keep the competitive focus on that mode. Another reason could be to avoid splitting the player base between different playlists in Ranked mode.
Apex Legends may not have Ranked Duos yet, but Season 20 saw some big changes to the gameplay. Respawn Entertainment made improvements to the Legends and introduced a new EVO Shield system, changing the way the game is played. They also added a new map called Thunderdome to the Mixtape playlist, which can be played in all three modes. We'll have to wait and see what other surprises Season 20 has in store for us in the coming weeks.
Editor's P/S:
As an avid Apex Legends player, I was eager to learn about the possibility of Ranked Duos. The news that Respawn Entertainment has no current plans to implement this mode was disappointing. Ranked Duos would provide a more competitive and engaging experience for players who prefer smaller squads. It would also cater to solo players, increasing their chances of finding 1v1 battles.
While I understand that Trios is the core experience of Apex Legends, I believe that Ranked Duos would complement the game without detracting from it. It could offer a different dynamic and challenge for players, and it would not necessarily split the player base as it would be an additional playlist rather than a replacement for Trios. I hope that Respawn Entertainment will reconsider its decision and consider adding Ranked Duos to Apex Legends in the future.
