The 22nd episode of Rurouni Kenshin began with Kenshin having a dream about fighting Hajime Saito of the Shinsengumi. He was then awakened by Kaoru Kamiya and Yahiko Myojin. Kenshin couldn't shake the feeling from his dream as the focus shifted to Sanosuke Sagara at Kaoru's dojo. A medicine vendor approached Sanosuke and turned out to be the Hajime Saito from Kenshin's dream.
Saito quickly dealt with Sanosuke while Kenshin and the others ran into Megumi Takani. After returning to the dojo, Megumi tended to Sanosuke for three days while Kenshin contemplated the return of his enemy. It was revealed that Saito was working for a government official responsible for an attack on Kenshin. Saito then left to go to his job, revealing himself to be a police inspector using the alias Fujita Goro.
Akamatsu then approached Saito the following day, visibly disappointed that he wouldn't have the opportunity to fight Kenshin. In response, Saito proposed a deal to Akamatsu, revealing a plan to lure Kenshin into a trap. This involved sending Kenshin a letter, ultimately leading to Akamatsu gaining the advantage over Kenshin thanks to the trap. The episode concluded with the revelation that Saito had secretly entered Kaoru’s dojo, while Kenshin struggled to break free from Akamatsu’s grasp.
