Fans are disappointed by the recently announced Nintendo Switch port of Red Dead Redemption, as it is not a remake or remaster but a standard port with minor upgrades.
The video comparison reveals minimal visual disparities between the Xbox 360 version and the Nintendo Switch port, showcasing subtle enhancements in fidelity and lighting. The price of $49.99 for the port appears excessive, given the disparity in significant graphical and mechanical improvements.
A video has been released comparing the graphics of Red Dead Redemption on Xbox 360 to those of the newly announced Nintendo Switch port. Fans have expressed disappointment upon learning that the highly anticipated remake or remaster of Rockstar Games' classic western game was actually just a regular port of Red Dead Redemption with minor technical improvements.
Originally released in 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Red Dead Redemption was met with both critical acclaim and commercial success. This eventually led to the creation of its technically ambitious and highly successful sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, in 2018. Rumors of some form of re-release of the 2010 classic have been circulating for months, with some speculating that it would be a full remake, similar to the graphical and mechanical style of Red Dead Redemption 2, while others suggested a simple remaster.
After the release of the trailer on August 7, fans were disappointed to learn that the rumored re-release of Red Dead Redemption was more of a remaster than a significant graphical upgrade. A comparison video by GameXplain on YouTube showcased the 13-year gap between the original 2010 Xbox 360 version and the recently announced 2023 Nintendo Switch port. Both versions used the same trailer, highlighting the minor and hardly noticeable graphical differences.
While there are some variations between the two versions, fans who anticipated a graphical improvement akin to its sequel were letdown. The overall fidelity has been slightly enhanced, with finer details such as facial features, blades of grass, and tree leaves being more visually apparent. However, graphically, Red Dead Redemption remains largely unchanged. The most noticeable distinction lies in the lighting, as scenes on the Nintendo Switch side of the split screen portray a warmer and slightly stylized hue compared to the original version. Aside from that, the two versions are nearly indistinguishable.
The port of Red Dead Redemption, including its zombie-themed DLC Undead Nightmare, will be available on PlayStation 4. However, it is surprising that it will not be released on PC. This updated version of the game will be sold for $49.99, even though it does not feature significant graphical or mechanical enhancements, essentially remaining the same as the original release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. Initially, Red Dead Redemption will be released digitally, with a physical release planned for October 13.
Currently, Red Dead Redemption can be played on PS3 and Xbox 360, and it will be made available for PS4 on August 17 with a Switch release also scheduled for that date.
