Rebel Moon Franchise: What to Expect in the Future
Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon franchise has released its first installment and has plans for more movies. Here's what to expect from the future of Rebel Moon.
The Future of Rebel Moon Movies
Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon franchise has released its first installment, but it won't be the last, as there are already plans for many more movies. Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire marks the start of what Snyder hopes will be at least a four-movie run. The writer/director of the project has suggested that A Child of Fire could have a 'trilogy of sequels,' meaning three additional movies. The first of these sequels is already finished, with the release date for Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver being in April 2024. However, the future of additional movies, like Rebel Moon 3, and beyond, is not yet confirmed.

In addition to plans for four Rebel Moon movies, Snyder intends to release parts one and two as extended editions. It's currently unknown if longer edits are intended for any entries past the first two films, but it would make sense if this were to happen. Snyder's name has become synonymous with movies sporting alternative, longer runtimes. In 2021, he released Zack Snyder's Justice League, an elongated edit of 2017's Justice League also known as the 'Snyder Cut.' So, if all the movies in Snyder's new Rebel Moon shared universe were to be given the same treatment, it wouldn't be a first.

2 Rebel Moon Movies Are Confirmed. They will both be on Netflix by April 2024. Of the four Rebel Moon movies in the pipeline, only two are confirmed to be happening. The first Rebel Moon movie was released on Netflix in December 2023. There is currently just one upcoming sequel, Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver, which is set to hit the same streaming service on April 19, 2024. The release of the second movie marks the end of officially sanctioned entries into the Rebel Moon movie franchise.

Initially, Zack Snyder pitched Rebel Moon as an entry into the Star Wars franchise, but he reimagined the idea when Disney rejected the story. The initial Star Wars influence is still notable in Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire, with both properties sharing a similar aesthetic and narrative. The episodic release structure of further Rebel Moon movies has become another homage to the property that inspired it — whether this was intentional or otherwise.

However, Rebel Moon differs quite drastically from Star Wars when it comes to their method of release. Star Wars movies are notable for the frenzy around their cinematic debuts, whereas Rebel Moon takes a much more limited approach to theatrical releases, with the focus being on streaming figures due to Snyder's partnership with Netflix.

Plans for Additional Movies and Extended Versions
2 More Rebel Moon Sequels Are Planned. Zack Snyder has continued to write Rebel Moon stories. Although Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver are currently the only concrete entries in the cinematic story, Zack Snyder has continued to work on further movies to add to the Rebel Moon canon. At present, Snyder has started writing the third Rebel Moon movie. There's yet to be official confirmation that a second sequel is happening, but the project's creator is planning for its future.

Streaming figures could play a part in the appearance of a third installment, as Netflix invested heavily in the first two Rebel Moon movies. Reviews for A Child of Fire have so far been fairly negative, so it would make sense for Netflix to hold off on commissioning another sequel until The Scargiver is released and the Rebel Moon story can continue to be told and therefore judged more fairly.

Rebel Moon Extended Versions Are Also Planned. The director is well-known for longer runtimes. Those familiar with Zack Snyder's work will be aware of his penchant for an extended cut of a movie. During his time with DC Studios, he increased the runtime not only of Justice League but also of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Snyder will soon repeat the feat by releasing extended cuts of both Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver by 2025. The move is a coy one by Snyder because if Netflix has not confirmed a third movie by then, the extended cuts could drum up further interest in Rebel Moon sequels further down the line.
