Rebel Moon debuts with Zack Snyder's slimmest Rotten Tomatoes rating

Zack Snyder's highly anticipated Netflix space opera, Rebel Moon, receives mixed reviews, reflecting his lowest Rotten Tomatoes score yet

Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder’s latest Netflix space opera, has received its first reviews and currently has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of the director’s career.

The first part of Snyder’s two-part sci-fi series has just started its limited theatrical release today (December 15), with its Netflix debut scheduled for next week. Initially intended as a Star Wars pitch, Rebel Moon has evolved into an original story and the potential foundation for a new franchise with the streaming platform.

A Child of Fire chronicles the journey of Kora, a former Imperium soldier who abandons her life of combat on a remote farm located on a distant moon. However, when the Motherworld, reminiscent of an Empire with a strong Nazi influence, endangers her village, she embarks on a quest across the galaxy to assemble fighters in order to resist the threat. Despite Snyder's polarizing filmography, the initial response to the first installment of Rebel Moon has been overwhelmingly unfavorable.

In our two-star review, we described the franchise as "DOA" and lacking substance in the sci-fi genre. This film may leave a negative mark on Snyder's filmography, as it is notably dull.

The Independent's review of Zack Snyder’s Justice League describes the film as a collection of the director's worst impulses, filled with shocking imagery and a focus on what would look good in a trailer. Variety also notes that Rebel Moon is watchable but built entirely from spare parts, potentially appealing only to Snyder cultists.

IGN's 4/10 review criticized Zack Snyder's space opera for having a derivative script, mediocre action sequences, and a superficial story, despite a great ensemble cast. Even positive reviews, such as Total Film's, noted the film's risk of being overshadowed by its own self-importance, but still praised its bombastic mayhem and grandiose visuals.

Film Stories also stated: "A Child Of Fire struggles with a plot that primarily serves as a setup for The Scargiver, but there are still enjoyable elements, depending on your opinion of Snyder, of course."

Rebel Moon is currently showing in cinemas and will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 22. Don't forget to read our interview with the cast here.

Editor's P/S

As a huge fan of Zack Snyder's work, I was eagerly anticipating the release of Rebel Moon, his latest sci-fi space opera. However, the overwhelmingly negative reviews have left me feeling disappointed and disheartened. The Rotten Tomatoes score of 17% is particularly concerning, as it represents the lowest rating of Snyder's career. It seems that critics have found the film to be lacking in substance, with a derivative script, mediocre action sequences, and a superficial story.

Despite the negative reviews, I remain hopeful that Rebel Moon may still offer some enjoyable elements for fans of Snyder's unique style. The film's bombastic mayhem and grandiose visuals have been praised by some critics, and I am curious to see how Snyder's vision unfolds on screen. However, I cannot deny that the low Rotten Tomatoes score has dampened my enthusiasm for the film, and I am concerned that it may not live up to my expectations.
