Prince William Expresses Gratitude to Irwin Family for Backing in Unexpected Virtual Address at Conservation Event

Prince William made a surprise appearance via video at the Steve Irwin Gala in Las Vegas, acknowledging the invaluable support of the Irwin family in advancing wildlife conservation initiatives and the prestigious Earthshot Prize.

Prince William surprised everyone by appearing at the Steve Irwin Gala in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 11. Even though he wasn't there in person, the 41-year-old Prince of Wales sent a video message at the beginning of the event. The ceremony honored the life and work of the popular conservationist and wildlife educator Irwin, who passed away at the age of 44 after a tragic stingray accident in 2006.

"Tonight is dedicated to conservation and carrying on Steve's global mission to safeguard life on our planet," William expressed in his speech, which was shared on social media. Steve's vision was to ensure the purest water, the cleanest air, and flourishing wildlife. Above all, he desired a bright future for our children by advocating for the preservation of life on Earth. This is a passion that I also hold dear, which is why I introduced the Earthshot Prize. The aim is to discover and amplify the most creative solutions to the world's pressing environmental issues. Our goal is to protect and rejuvenate our planet in the crucial decade leading up to 2030.

In 2020, William, in collaboration with broadcaster and natural historian Sir David Attenborough, launched the Earthshot Prize. Each year, the Prize recognizes five individuals for their environmental efforts and grants them £1 million to further their work.

At the 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards in Singapore in November 2023, Robert Irwin, the 20-year-old son of Steve Irwin, showed his support for the Prince of Wales' conservation efforts. Alongside his mom, Terri Irwin, and sister Bindi Irwin, Robert is carrying on his father's legacy in wildlife conservation.

Robert shared with People last year that Earthshot is incredibly important for wildlife conservation, climate action, and the world. He praised Prince William for using his platform and resources to make a positive impact, calling it refreshing and wonderful to see. Robert applauded the Duke for his efforts.

William expressed his gratitude to the Irwin family for their support of the Earthshot Prize on Saturday. He said he is "hugely grateful" for their contribution.

In his message, he mentioned his pride in virtually joining the celebration of the Irwin family's work through Wildlife Warriors. The charity, founded by Steve and Terri in 2002, has made a global impact and offers hope for the future. William emphasized the importance of making environmentally conscious choices to secure a healthy future for our planet.

The Steve Irwin gala, held in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 11, 2024, was attended by Robert Irwin, Bindi Irwin, and Terri Irwin. The event aimed to support the Wildlife Warriors conservationist organization.

He concluded by saying, "I hope you have a great night and thank you for showing concern for the future of our wildlife, our wild places, and our planet. Together, we can bring about positive change."

William recently returned to his public responsibilities after a short break due to his wife Princess Kate Middleton's cancer diagnosis. The 42-year-old Princess of Wales shared in March that she has been receiving preventive chemotherapy treatment in private and would be reducing her public appearances. The specific type of cancer she has has not been revealed.

William arrived at St. Mary’s Community Hospital in the Isles of Scilly on Friday, May 10, and shared an update on Kate and their children — Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6. He mentioned to hospital administrator Tracy Smith that Kate is "doing well" and that "the children are very jealous that I’m here and that they’re not here as well."

This visit to southwest England is William’s first overnight trip since Kate confirmed her diagnosis.

William’s father, King Charles III, is also battling an undisclosed form of cancer and resumed public duties late last month.
