President Joe Biden opened up about his struggles with mental health during a recent interview with Howard Stern. He shared that he had thoughts of suicide following the tragic deaths of his first wife, Neilia Biden, and their infant daughter in a car accident. Biden, now 81 years old, revealed how deeply impacted he was by the loss.
Joe shared that you don't need to be crazy to consider suicide. He described how, after reaching a high point in life, it can feel like that moment will never come again. He even thought about going to the Delaware Memorial Bridge to jump.
However, Joe decided against it because of his two sons, Beau Biden and Hunter Biden. He realized that he couldn't go through with it. He felt like he had experienced the best and that things would never improve.
Joe revealed that he had considered using alcohol to numb his pain, but his family history of alcoholism prevented him from doing so.
He shared, "I used to sit there and just think I’m going to take out a bottle of scotch. I’m going to just drink it and get drunk."

The president has shared how his family's support helped him during a difficult time. In December 1972, his wife Neilia and 13-month-old daughter Naomi tragically died in a car accident involving a tractor-trailer. Thankfully, their sons Beau and Hunter survived the accident.
Speaking on the “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” podcast in July 2023, Joe Biden reflected on the importance of his family during the grieving process. He mentioned how his sister Valerie and her husband immediately moved in to help him raise his children after he returned from the hospital.
Joe expressed his gratitude for his brothers Jim Biden and Frank Biden, who stood by him during tough times.
"They were always there for me, and that meant a lot. My sister and brothers are my best friends. I was really fortunate to have them," he added. "It makes a huge difference when you have people who support you. So, it's important to be there for others going through difficult times."
In 2015, Joe publicly mourned his son Beau, who passed away at the age of 46 following a battle with brain cancer.

Joe found love once more after losing his first wife. He married Jill Biden in 1977 and together they welcomed daughter Ashley Biden in 1981.
On the "On Purpose With Jay Shetty" podcast, Joe expressed, "My wife is my best friend. My sister, Valerie, and my brother Jim have played a significant role in my success. They are the ones I turn to for support the most."
