Senator Dianne Feinstein has died. She was 90.

Feinstein's death was confirmed by one of her family members to The New York Times on Friday, September 29. No additional details have been disclosed regarding the cause of her death. Prior to her passing, Feinstein, who became a senator in 1992 and held the record for being the longest-serving female senator, had been struggling with various health problems.

Senator Feinstein was briefly hospitalized yesterday afternoon as a precautionary measure following a minor fall at her home, according to an official statement released in August. All her scans came back clear and she was able to return home. Prior to this incident, Feinstein had taken a nearly three-month leave to recover from shingles.

In a statement made in March, Feinstein mentioned being hospitalized and receiving treatment in San Francisco. She expressed optimism about making a complete recovery. However, two months later, her office disclosed that she had been grappling with severe complications related to shingles for an extended period of time.

"In March, although the encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) had resolved shortly after her release from the hospital, the spokesperson revealed in May that she still experiences complications from Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition that causes temporary paralysis in part of the face."

"I am hereby declaring that I will not be seeking re-election in 2024. However, I am determined to make significant contributions towards the progress of California until the conclusion of my current term next year," she stated.

Dianne Feinstein achieved historical milestones in California politics, serving as the first female mayor of San Francisco, the first female elected Senator of California, and holding the record for being the longest-serving woman senator.

During her tenure in the Senate, Democrat Dianne Feinstein was a fierce advocate for climate reform, particularly addressing California's significant challenges of wildfires and droughts. One of her notable achievements was the implementation of the federal Assault Weapons Ban in 1994, which prohibited the production and sale of military-style assault weapons for a decade.

Feinstein experienced three marriages throughout her life. Her first marriage was to Jack Berman from 1956 to 1959, followed by a union with Bertram Feinstein from 1962 until his passing in 1978. Lastly, she was married to Richard Blum from 1980 until his unfortunate demise in February 2022, after battling cancer. Richard Blum was 86 years old at the time of his passing.
