Kamiya departed from Platinum Games due to diverging career paths, yet he intends to pursue game design in the times ahead. The future of his past ventures, such as Project GG and Bayonetta, remains uncertain; however, certain game series can uphold their quality even in the absence of their original creators.
Hideki Kamiya has officially launched his own YouTube channel to keep fans updated on his future endeavors. This follows his unexpected departure from Platinum Games.
Kamiya gained recognition as a co-founder of Platinum Games in 2007, alongside Shinji Mikami, Atsushi Inaba, and Tatsuya Minami. The studio is renowned for its high-quality action games, unique gameplay mechanics, and unconventional game design principles. Some notable titles include Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101, both of which were created by Kamiya himself. Additionally, they have collaborated with larger studios on titles such as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance for Konami and Star Fox Zero for Nintendo. Kamiya is also known for his straightforward yet humorous demeanor and his strict social media rules for fans, which have occasionally sparked controversy.
Kamiya bid farewell to Platinum Games earlier this year, concluding a remarkable 15-year tenure with the company. Currently, he has launched his very own YouTube channel. In his inaugural video, which spans nearly 10 minutes, he elucidates his future plans. Kamiya clarifies that he departed his previous role as he believed it was not the optimal path for his career. He asserts that retirement from game design is not on his agenda. However, he finds himself in a predicament where he is compelled to take paid vacation time due to a non-compete clause in his contract. Consequently, he is prohibited from working for another video game studio for an entire year. Furthermore, Kamiya does not have any forthcoming game announcements to disclose, but he eagerly awaits a return to the realm of game development.
In typical Kamiya fashion, the video concludes with the producer getting into a vibrant red Lamborghini and driving off to the unemployment office. As of now, the video has reached 1.7k views, and the channel itself has amassed an impressive 6.01k subscribers. The comments section is buzzing with excitement for this new chapter while also expressing a hint of sadness that Kamiya will no longer be involved in their beloved franchises. One commenter even suggests a collaboration between Kamiya and the renowned Super Smash Bros. producer, Masahiro Sakurai.
Although Kamiya seems content with his decision, there are concerns about the future of what he's leaving behind. Project GG is still shrouded in mystery, with minimal updates on its development, and Kamiya had previously hinted at plans for numerous Bayonetta games before his departure. Nevertheless, history has proven that some game series can maintain their quality even without their original producers (such as Kirby after Sakurai's departure or certain Mario games with Miyamoto in a reduced role). Thus, it is possible that Kamiya's legacy is in capable hands.
