Perfect Dark release date windows and platforms
As of now, there is no set release date for the Perfect Dark reboot. With the ongoing behind-the-scenes reports and staffing changes, it's unlikely that the game will be released in the near future. The original game was set in the year 2023, and since we've already passed that year, there's still no word on when we can expect the reboot.
Who's developing it?
The Initiative, one of Microsoft's newest studios, is developing the Perfect Dark reboot. Microsoft surprised some in 2021 by announcing a partnership with Tomb Raider studios Crystal Dynamics to jointly develop the game. Although Crystal Dynamics was later absorbed by Embracer Group, the company is still working with Microsoft on the Perfect Dark reboot. Previously, the game was also in development at Certain Affinity, a common Xbox partner, but this ended in 2021.
The Initiative has faced rocky development, as reported by IGN. The game's core mechanic was not finalized before its official reveal in 2020, and there has been little significant progress made since then.

Story and gameplay details
Joanna Dark, the series hero, is making a comeback for another thrilling adventure. The Perfect Dark reboot, as mentioned by former game director Dan Neuburger, is aimed at filling a current gap in the market for a "blockbuster" secret agent game.
The reboot, according to lead writer Christine Thompson, faces the challenge of striking a balance between nostalgia and the pursuit of new ideas. "You have to avoid being too devoted to the past but also not neglect it," Thompson commented. "Finding the right middle ground is crucial."
The reboot features a global ecological disaster, a departure from the original game's story. Corporations intervene with new technology, promising a hopeful future. However, developers warn of underlying issues in the seemingly ideal world, announced in a Game Awards 2020 video (see below).
Joanna showcases her physical prowess by sliding under and jumping over obstacles. The game incorporates camera movements resembling body cameras and Go Pros.
The game development process is highly iterative, and plans are subject to change. Therefore, the information provided by Microsoft in 2020 may no longer be accurate. In an interview video, developers repeatedly emphasized the "vision" for the game and its concepts, but it should be noted that these could evolve over time. It's worth mentioning that several developers featured in the video have since left Microsoft.
It's coming to Game Pass
As a first-party title, Perfect Dark is expected to join the Xbox Game Pass catalog, similar to other games developed by Microsoft's studios.
Shifting staff
A report from March 2022 revealed that over 30 individuals departed from The Initiative within the last 12 months, including game director Dan Neuburger and design director Drew Murray. Former senior developers working on The Initiative's Perfect Dark reboot disclosed that they left the team partly due to a perceived "lack of creative autonomy and slow development progress," as reported by VGC. The departures have significantly impacted the development momentum of the Perfect Dark reboot, according to the report.
The former developers informed VGC that some team members were frustrated with The Initiative's alleged "top-down" approach to decision-making in regard to design choices.
The report stated that former employees expressed frustration over the perceived lack of autonomy and feeling unheard on important matters such as development priorities, project planning, and team staffing among senior team members. In response, The Initiative boss Darrell Gallagher told VGC that staffing changes are typical for a new studio taking over a "beloved franchise" and attributed some of the changes to the "global upheaval" of the past couple of years.
Editor's P/S
As a long-time fan of the Perfect Dark series, I am both excited and cautious about the upcoming reboot. On the one hand, I am thrilled to see Joanna Dark return to action and experience the game's unique blend of stealth, action, and espionage. The original game was a groundbreaking title that pushed the boundaries of the first-person shooter genre, and I am eager to see how the reboot will build upon its legacy.
On the other hand, I am concerned about the game's development process, which has been plagued by delays and staffing changes. The lack of a concrete release date and the absence of substantial gameplay footage do not inspire confidence. I hope that Microsoft and The Initiative can overcome these challenges and deliver a game that lives up to the high expectations of fans.
