Christopher Nolan is experiencing a peak in his career, with accolades for Best Director from regional film critics associations for his work on Oppenheimer. This could be the year he clinches an Oscar, adding to his impressive catalog. However, he faced an unexpected critique while riding in a Peloton class.
During the New York Film Critics Circle awards, the acclaimed director shared an anecdote while accepting the Best Director award for Oppenheimer. Nolan did not specify the film in question, but it was clear that the instructor had no clue that he had a renowned filmmaker in his virtual class.
While pedaling on my Peloton, the instructor brought up one of my films and humorously commented, "Did anyone see this? That's a couple hours of my life I'll never get back again!" Nolan shared via Variety. "When Rex Reed criticizes your film, he doesn't ask you to work out! In a world where opinions are abundant, film criticism is often seen as democratized, but I believe it should be a respected profession rather than simply an instinct."
Despite a few missteps in recent years, Nolan remains unfazed. "Do we read reviews? Well, I'm British," he quipped. "At a family gathering, relatives often advise me, 'You probably shouldn't read The Guardian today, Christopher.'"
Oppenheimer has received some of the best reviews of Nolan's career and has become the highest-grossing biographical drama of all time, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody by nearly $50 million.

As a Gen Z fan, I find it amusing that a Peloton instructor would openly criticize a Christopher Nolan film during a workout class. It's quite ironic that while Nolan is receiving accolades and recognition for his work, he also faces unexpected critiques in unexpected places. The fact that the instructor was unaware of Nolan's presence in the class adds a humorous touch to the situation.
I believe that film criticism should be taken seriously and approached with respect, as Nolan suggests. While everyone has the right to express their opinions, it's important to recognize the expertise and knowledge that professional film critics bring to the table. However, I also understand that not everyone may agree with this perspective, and that's okay. Different opinions and viewpoints contribute to the richness of discussions surrounding films and art in general.
