The Atomic Thriller: Inside Nolan's Oppenheimer Project

Christopher Nolan has revealed why he was compelled to direct the upcoming film Oppenheimer. The movie, which is a thriller centered around J. Robert Oppenheimer, will showcase the creation of the Manhattan Project as Oppenheimer puts the final touches on the atomic bombs that would change the world forever. It's a departure from Nolan's previous action-packed projects, such as The Dark Knight Rises, Dunkirk, and Interstellar.

In an interview with Total Film, Nolan explained that he was particularly drawn to Oppenheimer due to the character's fascinating and ambiguous nature. Nolan stated, "I'm drawn to interesting protagonists – protagonists who have ambiguity to them. I think of any character I've dealt with, Oppenheimer is by far the most ambiguous and paradoxical. Which, given that I've made three Batman films, is saying a lot."

It is understandable why Nolan sees ambiguity in the creator of the atomic bomb, and with his upcoming film Oppenheimer, he will have ample opportunity to delve deep into the character's psyche. Oppenheimer will be Nolan's lengthiest film to date, with a runtime of almost three hours.

Who was Oppenheimer?
