Disney is returning with a new adaptation of Haunted Mansion, twenty years after the release of their first film based on the popular ride. The trailers for Haunted Mansion showcase an impressive cast, including Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, and Winona Ryder. Owen Wilson also stars as Father Kent in the film, a character who tries to protect against the dangerous ghosts and ghouls within the mansion.
Haunted Mansion isn't Owen Wilson's first experience playing a character stuck in a large, eerie house. In 1999's The Haunting, Wilson's character Luke Sanderson faced ghosts, but unfortunately, things didn't turn out well for him (spoiler alert). In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Wilson vaguely discussed the ending of his Haunted Mansion character Father Kent, comparing it to his previous venture into this genre:
Owen Wilson: The last time I found myself in this kind of genre, my character didn't survive. It always makes you a little uneasy because there's a desire within us to make it out alive. However, in this new storyline, I did manage to progress further. Did I reach the end? Well, I can't really reveal much about that.
Owen Wilson’s Last Haunted Mansion Story
In 1999, The Haunting, based on Shirley Jackson's novel The Haunting of Hill House, was released as one of many adaptations. Similar to Haunted Mansion, it featured a talented cast including Owen Wilson, Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Bruce Dern. The film was directed by Jan de Bont, known for Speed and Twister. The script, written by David Self and commissioned by Steven Spielberg, was eagerly awaited due to the cast, special effects, and high budget. Despite earning over $100 million, the film received negative reviews from critics, with a 17% critic score and 28% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, early social media reactions suggest better reception for Owen Wilson's return to the supernatural in Haunted Mansion.
