OpenAI Search Is Not Happening
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, clarified that the rumors about a new search engine being announced on May 13 are not true. Recent developments have led to speculation that OpenAI will soon integrate real-time content from English, Spanish, and French publications into ChatGPT, along with links to the original sources.
Many search engines have attempted to compete with Google but have not succeeded in dethroning it as the top search engine. Currently, a new wave of hybrid generative AI search engines is trying to surpass Google, with limited success so far.
Sam Altman, a prominent figure, has stated that creating a new search engine to challenge Google is not a feasible strategy. He believes that technological disruption is the key to replacing Google by completely changing the way search is done. Therefore, the speculation that Altman would introduce a similar search engine on Monday was unfounded, as he has previously dismissed the idea as unviable.
So perhaps it’s not a surprise that he recently ended the speculation by explicitly saying that he will not be announcing a search engine on Monday.
He tweeted:
“not gpt-5, not a search engine, but we’ve been hard at work on some new stuff we think people will love! feels like magic to me.”
“New Stuff” May Be Iterative Improvement
It's highly probable that the upcoming announcement will involve iterative enhancements to ChatGPT, rather than a complete replacement. This aligns with Altman's recent comments on his approach to ChatGPT, where he emphasized continuous improvement. He mentioned:
Shipping a product that you're not proud of is not ideal, but it's still better than not shipping at all. In this situation, it's important to release updates gradually for the benefit of society.
While there may be circumstances in the future that make iterative deployment less effective, for now, it seems like the best strategy. We have learned a lot from this approach, and hopefully, it has been beneficial for others as well.
Improving ChatGPT iteratively is Sam Altman’s preference and recent clues point to what those changes may be.
Recent Deals Contain Clues
OpenAI has been partnering with news media and User Generated Content publishers since December 2023. These partnerships have been reported by mainstream media as content licensing deals for training large language models. However, an important detail that was recently highlighted is that these agreements also grant OpenAI access to real-time information. This real-time data will be utilized by OpenAI to provide attribution through links.
This means that users of ChatGPT will now have the opportunity to access real-time news and incorporate this up-to-date information creatively within the ChatGPT platform.
Dotdash Meredith Deal
Dotdash Meredith (DDM) is the publisher of popular magazines like Better Homes & Gardens, FOOD & WINE, InStyle, Investopedia, and People. This partnership goes beyond just using the content for training purposes. It's all about featuring Dotdash Meredith content directly in ChatGPT.
The announcement mentioned that OpenAI will feature content and links from DDM in ChatGPT responses. This partnership showcases OpenAI's commitment to collaborating with creators and publishers for a better internet.
Each month, over 200 million Americans rely on our content to guide them in making decisions, solving problems, finding inspiration, and living more fulfilling lives. This partnership ensures that the most valuable and up-to-date content is delivered directly to the core of ChatGPT.
A statement from OpenAI further supports the belief that they plan to incorporate licensed third-party content into ChatGPT responses.
OpenAI explained:
“We’re thrilled to partner with Dotdash Meredith to bring its trusted brands to ChatGPT and to explore new approaches in advancing the publishing and marketing industries.”
Something that DDM also gets out of this deal is that OpenAI will enhance DDM’s in-house ad targeting in order show more tightly focused contextual advertising.
Le Monde And Prisa Media Deals
In March 2024, OpenAI made an exciting announcement about partnering with two major global media companies, Le Monde and Prisa Media. Le Monde is a renowned French news publication, while Prisa Media is a Spanish language multimedia company. What makes these partnerships intriguing is that they allow OpenAI to access real-time data in both French and Spanish.
Prisa Media, headquartered in Madrid, Spain, is a prominent global Spanish language media company. It consists of various forms of media such as magazines, newspapers, podcasts, radio stations, and television networks. Its influence spans across countries from Spain to America, including the United States, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, and Panama. This means OpenAI gains access to a wealth of real-time information and an extensive audience of millions.
OpenAI explicitly announced that the purpose of this deal was to bring this content directly to ChatGPT users.
The announcement explained:
We are always working on enhancing ChatGPT and showing our support for the news industry's vital role in providing timely, reliable information to users. Our partnerships with Le Monde and Prisa Media will allow ChatGPT users to access their top-notch content on the latest events, enhancing the user experience. Additionally, their content will play a significant role in refining and training our models.
This collaboration goes beyond just providing training data; it's about delivering up-to-date news information to ChatGPT users, keeping them informed and engaged.
The announcement elaborated in more detail:
“…our goal is to enable ChatGPT users around the world to connect with the news in new ways that are interactive and insightful.”
In our article on April 30th, we mentioned that OpenAI will now display links in ChatGPT. The purpose behind this update is for OpenAI to showcase third-party content with clickable links.
OpenAI recently discussed the collaboration between Le Monde and Prisa Media, emphasizing the importance of this partnership.
Over the next few months, users of ChatGPT will have the opportunity to engage with news content from various publishers. This will involve concise summaries with proper credit and improved links to the original articles, enabling users to explore more information or related articles on the publishers' websites.
Furthermore, there are new collaborations in place with organizations such as The Financial Times. These partnerships highlight the introduction of a fresh ChatGPT feature, enabling users to engage with real-time news and stay updated on current events.
OpenAI’s Monday May 13 Announcement
It is likely that the announcement on Monday will reveal that ChatGPT users can now engage with content related to current events. This aligns with OpenAI's recent partnerships with news media companies. While there may be other features announced, this update seems to be strongly hinted at.
