The authors claim that OpenAI's ChatGPT program, which they describe as a large-scale commercial operation, systematically engages in widespread theft of their intellectual property. This lawsuit involves a total of fourteen authors who are taking legal action against OpenAI.
Authors Guild CEO Mary Rasenberger expressed the urgent need to halt this theft promptly in order to safeguard our remarkable literary culture, which significantly contributes to various thriving creative industries in the U.S., as reported by the AP.
Rasenberger further emphasized that exceptional books are usually crafted by individuals who devote their entire careers and lives to learning and honing their skills. To ensure the preservation of our literature, authors should possess the authority to determine whether and how their works are utilized by generative AI.
In a promotional video for House of the Dragon, George R.R. Martin is seen discussing the lawsuit. The lawsuit revolves around an AI-generated novel titled "A Dawn of Direwolves," which the suit alleges infringes upon Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire by presenting a highly detailed prequel with some of the same characters from Martin's original books.
OpenAI's spokesperson emphasized the company's commitment to respecting the rights of writers and authors, acknowledging the importance of ensuring they reap the benefits of AI technology.
