Next-Level Open World: Dragon's Dogma 2 Sets New Standards by Channeling GTA 5's Success

Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2, an anticipated action-RPG, draws inspiration from the renowned Grand Theft Auto 5, promising an enthralling gameplay experience

Highlights

The developers of Dragon's Dogma 2 have looked to Grand Theft Auto 5 for inspiration in creating a living world with independent NPCs.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is set to deliver an awe-inspiring experience with its expansive open world, boasting a map four times larger than its predecessor. Capcom's highly-anticipated action-RPG takes cues from Rockstar's acclaimed Grand Theft Auto 5, further enhancing the game's immersive open world. With the original Dragon's Dogma already renowned for its distinctive take on fantasy in an open world setting, fans can expect nothing short of greatness from the upcoming sequel.

Dragon's Dogma stood out due to its unique pawn system and large-scale boss battles. Dragon's Dogma 2 aims to continue the original game's traditions while introducing new features that will excite fans. Recently, Capcom unveiled an impressive new trailer for Dragon's Dogma 2 at the Tokyo Game Show 2023, and the game's developers have since provided additional details in interviews.

In a conversation with VGC, Hideaki Itsuno, the director of Dragon's Dogma 2, discussed the game's sources of inspiration. Itsuno stated that the primary inspiration for Dragon's Dogma 2 was the original game itself, as the team's goal for the sequel was to incorporate features that they had wanted to include in the first game but were unable to due to time constraints and hardware limitations. Another source of inspiration for Dragon's Dogma 2 was Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5. Itsuno expressed admiration for the game's immersive world, where NPCs seemed to live independently of the player. The team hopes to achieve a similar "living world" experience in Dragon's Dogma 2.

The success of Dragon's Dogma 2 in creating an immersive open world comparable to Grand Theft Auto 5 remains uncertain. However, the developers' pursuit of this goal is promising for the game's world. Additionally, Dragon's Dogma 2's map is rumored to be four times larger than the original game, further indicating its ambitious nature. While fans need to personally experience the game to determine if it meets expectations, they must wait until its anticipated release in 2024, a staggering 12 years after the first game, somewhat paralleling the long wait for GTA 6.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
