Eddie Howe reclines in his seat, a smile forming on his face. "I won't be using those words," he replies.
Howe is reacting to Newcastle CEO Darren Eales' assessment of the Champions League draw for this season. With French champions Paris Saint-Germain, seven-time winners AC Milan, and 1997 champions Borussia Dortmund as opponents, Eales believes Newcastle has found themselves in a "super group of death."
Howe, however, expresses his disagreement. "I don't truly believe in the concept of the group of death," he explains with a wide smile in his exclusive interview with We.
"While it undeniably presents a significant challenge for us, being in the Champions League means we will constantly come up against formidable opponents."
Newcastle will make their return to the Champions League group stage after a long hiatus since the 2002/03 season. They will be facing formidable opponents, all of whom have made it to the final in the past 16 years. In addition to the thrilling European nights at St James' Park, Howe is eagerly anticipating three exciting journeys abroad as he prepares for his managerial debut in the competition.
"Without a doubt, we are determined to approach this challenge head-on and showcase our utmost abilities. I am greatly excited for this opportunity," expressed the head coach of Newcastle.
I believe it is really beneficial for our supporters as the journeys we will have in Europe are not excessively long, which is highly important for them. Therefore, our aim is to ensure safe travels for the club.
These experiences will be enjoyable for everyone involved. We will have the opportunity to visit remarkable destinations, magnificent stadiums, and compete against exceptionally strong teams. There is an overwhelming sense of positivity towards this opportunity, and it is impossible not to be thrilled by the exciting challenge that lies ahead.

Newcastle have made a significant investment of £130m on fresh recruits during the summer transfer window, as Howe endeavors to construct a squad that possesses the necessary resilience to contend in various competitions. The acquisition of midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan stands as a testament to Newcastle's ambition, as the club set a new record for their most expensive signing at £55m. Adding to their strengthened team, the 23-year-old has been complemented by the arrival of winger Harvey Barnes from Leicester for £39m, right-back Tino Livramento from Southampton for £36m, and left-back Lewis Hall on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
"It has been a successful transfer period," affirms Howe. "I am content with my acquisitions and satisfied with the squad. Our numbers have significantly improved compared to last year, which is the essence of a strong squad.
"We have introduced exceptional players to the team who possess remarkable attitudes and mindset."

'It's been a positive window - the squad is stronger'
Sandro Tonali has had a promising beginning to his time in Tyneside. Despite the influx of new players, Newcastle's start to the 2023/24 season has been challenging. They suffered a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool last Sunday, following a 1-0 loss to Manchester City. While Aston Villa was soundly defeated 5-1 on the opening weekend, there have been suggestions that Howe could benefit from a prolific striker in his squad.Despite leading 1-0 and enjoying a numerical advantage for the majority of the match against Liverpool, Newcastle suffered a disappointing defeat as two late goals from Darwin Nunez completely changed the outcome, leaving manager Howe with a difficult loss to accept.
Newcastle had a total of 23 shots compared to Liverpool's nine in the game, with their expected goals (xG) standing at 1.99 while Liverpool recorded 0.88. This led pundit Gary Neville to suggest that Howe lacks a potent attacker capable of effectively finishing a game, yet the Magpies boss remains confident in the quality of his strikers.
Reflecting on missed opportunities and losses as a team, it is important to acknowledge the areas that require improvement. However, I have full faith in the abilities of our players, including Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak, as well as the rest of our attacking lineup. Despite the quality and depth of our squad, it is important to recognize that success is not guaranteed solely based on these factors.
"We have to face the significant moments during the game, and unfortunately, we missed out on a few chances. Gary is correct in that regard, and it was a source of frustration for us.
"This week has been a painful one for all of us, but we will recover and be prepared for the upcoming game."

'Neville comments fair but I'm happy with strikers'
Next up is the game on Saturday, as Newcastle embarks on a lengthy journey to the south coast to take on Brighton. Despite their recent loss to West Ham, the Seagulls have consistently impressed under the guidance of head coach Roberto De Zerbi. As we approach Gameweek Four, Brighton sits at the top of the Premier League table, having scored an impressive nine goals."Roberto has performed admirably," Howe remarks ahead of the live contest on We.
"I have had the privilege of meeting him on a few occasions. We both toured the same region during the summer, faced each other in pre-season, and competed against each other last year. Hence, we are well aware of their talent and capabilities.
Howe: 'Incredible' De Zerbi has improved Premier League
Regarding Newcastle’s efforts to evade a third successive Premier League loss, it is crucial for Howe to rely on the consistent performance of winger Anthony Gordon, who has exhibited remarkable form in the initial stages of the season.Following his triumph in the European U21 Championship for England earlier this summer, where he was also awarded the title of player of the tournament, Gordon has continued to impress at the club level. Despite only scoring one goal in his 16 league appearances since joining Newcastle for £45m in January, the former Everton star has already contributed one goal and one assist in the three Premier League games played this season.
"He has shown tremendous qualities," says Howe. "Transitioning to a new team in January is always challenging for a player, but I believe that last year was crucial for his development. During that four or five-month period, he had the opportunity to observe and fully immerse himself in the Newcastle environment, both on and off the pitch. I believe this gave him a significant advantage going into this pre-season, as he already had a clear understanding of what to anticipate."
He has been in exceptional form lately and is set to become a vital player for our team. We truly believe that he possesses all the qualities to excel. Moreover, he is being challenged and encouraged by some outstanding players in his vicinity. In terms of squad depth, we have a strong lineup. I am genuinely delighted with Anthony's performance.
Howe: Gordon has everything to excel
Under Howe's leadership, Newcastle underwent a remarkable transformation. Upon his arrival in November 2021, they languished in 19th place in the Premier League standings, devoid of a single victory. However, the former Bournemouth manager not only safeguarded the Magpies' position in the top-flight but also propelled them back into the illustrious realm of European football within a mere 18 months. This triumphant journey, in tandem with the backing of a consortium from Saudi Arabia, has heightened the expectations for this season. Nevertheless, Howe refrains from specifying precise objectives, preferring to approach the challenge with a different perspective.

In the Premier League era, no other Newcastle boss has a higher win percentage than Eddie Howe, except for Kevin Keegan.
"We as human beings are always tempted to desire more and strive for greater achievements, and that is exactly what we aim to do," he states.
However, as the manager, I have always been hesitant to set specific targets and provide exact figures regarding our goals. This is due to the fact that each season presents unique circumstances and varying challenges.
Undoubtedly, this year's campaign will be remarkable for us, considering the substantial number of matches we will play and the multiple competitions we are actively participating in.
"We're going to be tested and stretched, but I really believe in the group I have. I believe in our method of work and I'm looking forward to the challenges that await us."
