A new statue of Queen Elizabeth II was unveiled in England on the day that would have been her 98th birthday. It stands at seven feet tall and is made of bronze, showing the late monarch as a young woman. The statue was revealed next to Oakham Library in the U.K. on Sunday, April 21, adorned in ceremonial robes with the George IV Diadem on her head. She also wore the Order of the Garter sash and one of her beloved corgis sat at her feet.
A message engraved on the monument reads, "Queen Elizabeth II, 1926 – 2022. Erected as a tribute to her late Majesty through public subscription by Rutland people."
The Rutland City council took to Instagram on Monday, April 22 to share a photo of the monument. The caption celebrated the historic moment in Rutland, as the first permanent memorial to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was unveiled next to Oakham Library. The event was attended by hundreds of people, who watched as the statue was revealed by Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Sarah Furness, Bishop of Peterborough Debbie Sellins, and Alicia Kearns MP.
The Rutland City council shared that the event featured music from Harrington School Band and Oakham School Band, along with bagpipes and the National Anthem. The bronze statue of Britain’s beloved longest reigning monarch was crafted by Hywel Pratley and was funded by donations from local businesses and the public. Pratley, 51, previously offered a glimpse of his creation in 2023 and included two additional corgis at the base of the statue for the final rendition.
He mentioned to The Telegraph that she remained strong until the very end. He hopes that the design conveys a feeling of purpose and stability.
On the other hand, Furness mentioned to the outlet that she aimed for a design that portrays Her Majesty as a Queen for future generations. However, they also wanted to showcase her warmth and humanity in the design.
Elizabeth passed away in September 2022 at the age of 96, following an incredible seven decades as the reigning monarch. After her passing, Sarah Ferguson, the queen's former daughter-in-law, took custody of her two beloved corgis.
Former royal staffer Grant Harrold revealed that Elizabeth's birthday was commemorated in a private and respectful manner.

"They may not show it openly, but I'm sure they'll raise a toast to her in private," he mentioned to Slingo through People on Sunday. "I believe they will spend the day reflecting on the late queen."
During his service to King Charles III and Queen Camilla from 2004 to 2011, Harrold mentioned that if you visit Windsor Castle, you might see flowers on the tomb sent by family members. It is common for flowers to be placed on royal graves, especially on royal anniversaries. So, there is a good chance you will find flowers on the tombstone.
