My Life With the Walter Boys: The Unfair Ending and Alex's Potential for Growth

A detailed analysis of the ending of My Life With the Walter Boys season 1 and the potential for Alex's growth in season 2.

The Unfair Ending of Season 1

Warning! This article contains spoilers for My Life With the Walter Boys season 1. The ending of My Life with the Walter Boys season 1 has the potential to ruin Alex's story, but season 2 has an opportunity to avoid that scenario. The coming-of-age teenage show follows Jackie as she moves to a new town after her parents' tragic passing, and it includes a classic TV love triangle between her, Alex, and Cole. However, after the events in the season 1 finale, My Life with the Walter Boys did Alex a disservice given his growth throughout the season. My Life with the Walter Boys ending differs from the one in the book, as the Netflix TV show is based on Ali Novak's 2014 novel, originally a Wattpad story. Jackie dates Alex for most of season 1, but he is portrayed as Jackie's safe choice both in the book and the show. Since the adaptation goes further in making Alex likable, including giving him some of the scenes that Cole originally had in the book, My Life with the Walter Boys season 1 ending is even more unfair, both because of Alex's character arc, and the closure he gets in the book.

My Life With The Walter Boys Tried To Show Alex Grow (But His Ending Could Ruin It). The show did to him exactly what he feared. In season 1, Alex constantly competed with his brother, Cole. Their complicated relationship stems from the fact that Cole kissed Alex's ex-girlfriend, Paige, and Alex tried to prove to himself and to Cole that he's better than him, and that is part of why he wanted to date Jackie so much. However, My Life with the Walter Boys tried to show his growth. Following an intense conversation with Cole in the season's second-to-last episode, "Revolutions," Alex finally talks to his ex. After finding out Cole didn't know he was dating Paige, he tells her "I am somebody, and you missed out," proving that he was finally starting to grow. Despite Alex showing Jackie his vulnerable side, My Life with the Walter Boys season 1's ending risked failing the character, especially since Jackie did exactly what he feared. Alex was terrified of Jackie cheating on him with Cole, and, since Jackie and Cole kissed in the finale, this scene could ruin all his character development. Although Jackie's cheating while still dating Alex keeps him as an option if Netflix were to give the teenage romance drama a second season, it would also break him if he found out, which would ruin his relationship with Cole forever. Season 1 of My Life with the Walter Boys is streaming exclusively on Netflix.

How Alex Could Still Get His Happy Ending In My Life With The Walter Boys. If he doesn't find out about Jackie and Cole's kiss. My Life with the Walter Boys ended with Jackie leaving for New York, and it's unclear where her relationship with Alex stands. However, Alex could still get his happy ending in season 2, but surely not with Jackie. Given that he had an intense moment with his best friend, Kiley, in the finale, he should finally see he's destined to be with her. Although neither made any moves to get out of the friendzone, Kiley had been there for Alex for years, and she always supported him. This is exactly what he needs to grow, and My Life with the Walter Boys season 2 could give him that.
