The sequel to Mortal Kombat 2 is set to bring more action and big-screen fatalities. Here's the latest on the release date, cast, plot, and more. Fans of Liu Kang and Johnny Cage can look forward to the second modern Mortal Kombat film.

The film's abundance of violence, explicit language, and graphic deaths justified its hard-R rating, and the sequel is expected to match or surpass the intensity of the first movie. Although official information is limited, here's a comprehensive overview of everything currently known about Mortal Kombat 2.

Is there a Mortal Kombat 2 release date?

As of November 2023, Mortal Kombat 2 does not have an official release date.

Production for the sequel officially began earlier this year, as announced by producer Todd Garner on June 22. "And we're off!" he exclaimed.

"I'm excited to get started and believe me, we have taken feedback to heart. We have learned from our mistakes and are dedicated to creating the best MK2 possible. I fully respect everyone's opinions, but I also have the right to block any abusive behavior. So... let's embark on an amazing journey!"

James Wan also shared a photo of the sequel’s clapperboard as filming kicked off on the movie, revealing the movie’s official logo.

After years of troubled development, the first rebooted film finally hit cinemas in 2021. With a clear vision and storyline in place, fans can expect the sequel to be much quicker to make. A safe bet for the release of Mortal Kombat 2 could be anywhere in 2024.

However, any estimates were thrown up in the air with the writers’ and actors’ strikes, which have since ended after the unions reached a new deal.

The sequel's production was initially set to kick off in early 2024, but Garner's announcement confirmed filming to resume before the end of 2023, suggesting a possible 2024 release date. Karl Urban also posted a photo with other cast members, indicating that production had already resumed.

Rest assured, we’ll update you here with any further release date details as they emerge.

Mortal Kombat 2 cast: Who’s in it?

The Mortal Kombat 2 cast is expected to include:

Lewis Tan as Cole Young

Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade

Mehcad Brooks as Jax

Chin Han as Shang Tsung

Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden

Ludi Lin as Liu Kang

Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion

Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero/Noob Saibot

Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn

Karl Urban as Johnny Cage

Desmond Chiam as Edenian King Jerrod

Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sinde

Damon Herriman as Quan Chi

Tati Gabrielle as Jade

Adeline Rudolph as Kitana

With characters like Cole Young, Sonya Blade, and Jax making it through the intense first chapter, it's highly likely that we'll be seeing them again for the next round.

The return of Scorpion, Raiden, Liu Kang, and Shang Tsung is essential for a true Mortal Kombat film. With Karl Urban joining as Johnny Cage and fan-favorite fighter Baraka, played by C.J. Bloomfield, confirmed to appear, the original lineup is set to make a strong comeback.

We’ll update this space with more cast announcements as and when they come.

Mortal Kombat 2 plot

After the events of the initial Mortal Kombat movie, it seems highly likely that a proper tournament bearing the series' name is on the horizon. Cole Young's primary objective at the end of the first installment was to locate other fighters in order to prepare for the Mortal Kombat tournament.

The first fighter on the list, hinted at in the post-credits scene, seems to be Johnny Cage, whose name appeared on a poster before the screen faded to black. Therefore, the sequel's storyline may center around recruiting Cage and a few other fighters before they engage in the crucial combat spectacle.

There’s been talk about Mortal Kombat 2 possibly having scenes set in the equivalent of Hell in the franchise, Netherrealm. This speculation stems from a photo posted by producer Todd Garner featuring a red-lit stone floor. Although Garner’s picture doesn't come with any explanation, its setting and color have led fans to believe it represents a Netherrealm area.

It’s worth noting, however, that full story details are still being ironed out to this day. So do take the above with a grain of salt until official confirmation arrives.

Is there a Mortal Kombat 2 trailer yet?

As filming has not yet begun, there is currently no official trailer for Mortal Kombat 2. We can expect teasers from the production set in the upcoming months, but a full trailer may not be released until early 2024. In the meantime, here's a reminder of the original Mortal Kombat trailer to keep you entertained.

Editor's P/S

As a Gen Z fan, I am eagerly anticipating the release of Mortal Kombat 2. The first film was a thrilling and action-packed reimagining of the classic fighting game series, and I can't wait to see what the sequel has in store.

I'm particularly excited to see the return of Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and Mehcad Brooks as Jax. These three characters were the heart of the first film, and I'm eager to see how their stories continue. I'm also excited to see the introduction of new characters, such as Johnny Cage and Baraka. These two characters are fan favorites, and I can't wait to see how they're brought to life on the big screen.

Overall, I'm very optimistic about Mortal Kombat 2. The first film was a solid start, and I believe that the sequel has the potential to be even better. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the action, gore, and fatalities that make Mortal Kombat so popular.
