New behind-the-scenes photo from Mortal Kombat 2 has fans excited that the movie sequel will feature a key location from the video games. Following the success of the 2021 adaptation, Mortal Kombat 2 is highly anticipated by fans of the popular fighting game franchise.
Director Simon McQuoid is poised to reunite with nearly the entire original cast of the film, including Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion. Additionally, Mortal Kombat 2 will introduce new actors to the mix, with Karl Urban taking on the role of fan-favorite character Johnny Cage in the sequel.
Mortal Kombat 2 fans hyped as set photo teases Neatherrealm
Amidst the recent surge of Mortal Kombat 2 casting updates, little information about the movie's storyline has been revealed. However, a photograph posted by producer Todd Garner has led fans of the franchise to speculate that the sequel will be set, at least in part, in Netherrealm.
“That shade of red is so surreal,” one user commented in response to Garner’s photo of a crimson-drenched stone floor. “It totally reminds me of the Netherrealm,” another person agreed. "Do you think Scorpion is in the Netherrealm?" a third user speculated, possibly referring to Scorpion’s fate at the end of the last Mortal Kombat game.
The video game source material for Mortal Kombat 2 features Netherrealm as the fiery underworld where key characters reside, including Scorpion, Shinnok, Quan Chi, and Noob Saibot. However, it has not been officially confirmed by anyone involved with Mortal Kombat 2, including Garner, that Netherrealm will be included in the movie. Therefore, any online speculation about its appearance should be taken as pure speculation for the time being.
Mortal Kombat writer confirms Warner Bros. nixed a DC crossover movie
However, the chances of fans' Mortal Kombat 2/Netherrealm theories becoming reality are higher than other rumors. For instance, screenwriter Jeremy Adams, who worked on Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, has confirmed that there will not be a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe movie.
“I am aware that we proposed [an animated Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe film] some time ago, but it was rejected,” he reported. The writer also expressed skepticism about the possibility of any other animated Mortal Kombat films being made, although he acknowledged that he does not have access to Warner Bros.' plans.

As an enthusiastic fan of the Mortal Kombat franchise, I am thrilled by the tantalizing set photo hinting at the appearance of Netherrealm in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie. The fiery underworld is a key location in the video games and is home to some of the most iconic characters in the series, including Scorpion, Shinnok, Quan Chi, and Noob Saibot.
The mere possibility of seeing these characters brought to life on the big screen in Netherrealm is incredibly exciting and has fueled my anticipation for the sequel. While it's important to remember that the appearance of Netherrealm in the movie has not been officially confirmed, the speculation among fans is a testament to the rich lore and captivating environments that the Mortal Kombat universe offers. I can't wait to see if these speculations become a reality when Mortal Kombat 2 hits theaters.
