Monstrous horror film scales the Netflix top 10 rankings

A chilling horror film labeled as Rotten fearlessly rises through the ranks of the ever-changing Netflix top 10 chart

The Netflix top 10 chart is constantly in flux, as evidenced by the recent addition of a "Rotten" horror movie. In recent months, the chart has experienced significant fluctuations, with The Equalizer 3 dominating for several consecutive weeks, and lesser-known titles like the Sniper series and Lakeview Terrace making unexpected comebacks.

The streaming platform's original content, Fool Me Once and The Brothers Sun, is also gaining popularity as the new year begins. The top 10 chart has seen a surprising new entry with a previously deemed "Rotten" horror movie.

“Rotten” horror movie climbs the Netflix top 10 chart

The First Purge, a horror movie released in 2018, is currently sitting pretty in the Netflix top 10 chart – despite its shocking 27% audience score.

Featuring Marisa Tomei, Y’lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, and Jovian Wade, the movie's official synopsis says: "The New Founding Fathers of America decide to test a sociological theory and allow everyone within Staten Island to vent out their aggression for 12 hours. But things get unexpectedly out of control." This movie is part of The Purge film series, which also includes The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy, The Purge: Election Year, The First Purge, The Forever Purge, and the upcoming untitled sixth movie.

The First Purge marks the first time in the franchise’s history that it was not directed by James DeMonaco. Despite its newfound success on Netflix, the film’s popularity was initially lackluster, reflected in its 55% Tomatometer rating and a mere 27% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Keith Garlington's review of "The First Purge" states that, despite its entertainment value, it's not a movie he would recommend. Similarly, Kevin Maher of The Times feels that the movie's ideas disappear, leaving only the gun violence behind, which he describes as deadening and very American.

Alix Turner from Ready Steady Cut offered a more positive perspective, stating, "The First Purge is a horror/thriller centered on a social political experiment in Staten Island where the rule of law is suspended for twelve hours. While it may seem to alleviate tension and anger on the surface, there is a hidden agenda at play." As for the current Netflix top 10 chart...

As a horror movie enthusiast, I'm intrigued by the rise of "The First Purge" in the Netflix top 10 chart despite its initially negative reception. It's fascinating to see how a movie that was deemed "Rotten" by critics and audiences alike can find new life on a streaming platform. This phenomenon highlights the diverse tastes of viewers and the power of word-of-mouth recommendations in the digital age. While the film's critical reception was lukewarm, its premise of a sociological experiment gone awry has clearly resonated with audiences seeking a thrilling and thought-provoking viewing experience.

The success of "The First Purge" on Netflix also underscores the platform's ability to provide a second chance for movies that may have underperformed in theaters. By offering a wide range of content, including both critically acclaimed and lesser-known titles, Netflix allows viewers to discover hidden gems and explore different genres. This democratization of entertainment has leveled the playing field for filmmakers and given a new lease on life to movies that might otherwise have been forgotten.
