Professional baseball player Tucupita Marcano has been banned for life from the MLB due to involvement in sports betting.

In a statement to the Associated Press on Tuesday, June 4, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of the games for the fans. He stated that enforcing the rules and policies regarding gambling conduct is crucial, as the prohibition against betting on Major League Baseball games has been a fundamental principle for over a century.

Manfred, who is 65 years old, expressed that playing baseball comes with a responsibility to avoid certain behaviors that may be legal for others.

The MLB started looking into Marcano, a 24-year-old player, after a sports betting operator alerted them. According to the AP, Marcano was found to have violated Major League Rule 21, which prohibits MLB players, umpires, league officials, and team employees from betting on games. Marcano, who plays shortstop for the San Diego Padres, has been sidelined due to an ACL surgery he underwent in July 2023. Prior to joining the Padres, he was a part of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.

An investigation by the MLB revealed that Marcano made a total of 387 baseball bets, with 231 of them being related to MLB games, between October 2022 and November 2023. Shockingly, he placed 25 bets on Pirates games while he was still a player for the team. This violation of Major League Rule 21 has led to a lifetime ban for Marcano. According to the rule, betting on games where no duty to perform exists results in a one-year suspension, while betting on games where there is a duty to perform leads to a lifetime ban.

Marcano mostly placed bets on game results and only won 4.3 percent of his MLB bets, according to the AP.

On Tuesday, the MLB suspended Oakland Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly for a year, as well as three minor league players who had bet on major league games. Marcano joins Jimmy O’Connell in 1924 and Pete Rose in 1989 as the only MLB players to be banned for life from the league.

News of Marcano's ban follows the incident involving Los Angeles Dodgers player Shohei Ohtani's interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Mizuhara was let go from the team after receiving $4.5 million from Ohtani to settle his gambling debts. Ohtani, 29, has denied any involvement in the scandal.

During a press conference in March, Ohtani stated, "I have never placed bets on baseball or any other sports, nor have I ever asked anyone to do so on my behalf. I have never used a bookmaker to gamble on sports."
