Marvel's Spider-Man 2 introduces Coney Island as an amusement park filled with villain references, creating a fun Easter egg hunt for fans.
The inclusion of Speed Demon, Big Wheel, and Hydro-Man in the park may or may not have a significant impact on the game's story or continuity.
Having these lesser-known and comical villains at the amusement park implies that they may not play a major role in the game, which could potentially disappoint certain fans.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is expanding its use of Easter eggs in one of its new locations, which appears to be dedicated to such references. The inclusion of Queens and Brooklyn in the sequel adds significant size to the open world, but Coney Island holds particular importance for a narrative sequence involving Peter introducing Harry to Mary Jane and Miles. The amusement park is filled with references to Spider-Man villains, although it differs from the ones fans have become accustomed to in Marvel’s Spider-Man.
In the first game, Insomniac cleverly incorporated classic Spider-Man villains as costumes worn by attendees at an ESU Halloween campus party. This served as a clever means for Insomniac to establish that Spider-Man had already encountered a few of these villains in the game's continuity, including Mysterio, who had not yet appeared elsewhere in the universe. While Marvel’s Spider-Man 2's carnival references villains such as Hydro-Man, Speed Demon, and Big Wheel, these Easter eggs may not hold any explicit significance within the canon.
Marvel’s Spider-Man’s Coney Island Theme Park is One Big Nod to Obscure Villains
The amusement park in this scenario offers an exploration of attractions filled with hidden references to villains, which have no relevance to the narrative of Marvel's Spider-Man 2. While it is already offensive to see ESU party-goers dressed as murderous terrorists and criminals, having an amusement park dedicated to these individuals would be even more reprehensible.
The roller coaster named "Speed Demon," the Ferris wheel named "Big Wheel," and an attraction called "Hydro Bench" referencing Morris Bench's Hydro-Man are appropriately themed. However, if these attractions were directly named after the actual characters they represent, it would trivialize them as comical rather than the threats they are to the city.
However, since these villain references have yet to be seen, it appears that they are simply meant to be nods to the villains, implying that fans may never actually encounter Speed Demon, Big Wheel, or Hydro-Man in the Marvel's Spider-Man franchise. It would be too convenient to introduce a character named Hydro-Man named Morris Bench solely because of the amusement park attraction. Similarly, it would be strange to feature villains named after the roller coaster or Ferris wheel after they have already been established, rather than the other way around.
Additionally, it is possible that the amusement park will have numerous other rides and attractions that reference additional villains. This could provide insights into which Spider-Man villains Insomniac has chosen to not prioritize. Insomniac does not need to include every single villain, but it is hoped that they will not exclusively focus on the most popular ones and disregard lesser-known villains by relegating them to mere Easter eggs at Coney Island.
The inclusion of hidden villains is an entertaining approach to these characters, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may continue to hint at such antagonists. It is possible that Coney Island could serve as a resting place for rejected and comically dismissed potential villains. While characters like Kraven and Venom are highly regarded by Insomniac, lesser-known and humorous villains may be left in the background where they arguably belong. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be released on October 20, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
