This variation originates from a disruptive event behind the scenes that profoundly affected the Rick and Morty cast. In January 2020, Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the show, faced legal charges of false imprisonment and felony domestic battery related to an alleged incident.

Following the announcement of this charge, several other allegations emerged. Consequently, both Rick and Morty and Roiland's Hulu animated series, Solar Opposites, terminated his employment. Despite the original incident's criminal charges being dropped due to lack of evidence, Roiland remains dismissed.
In addition to being the creator, Roiland also provided the voices for both Rick and Morty. This led to the need for finding soundalikes to recast both roles. The new trailer for Rick and Morty does not disclose the replacement of these roles, possibly to maintain the enigmatic nature of the characters, who have developed their own existence separate from the actors behind their voices.
