Known for his stellar creature work, del Toro's involvement in the Star Wars franchise seemed like a perfect fit, especially considering the iconic cantina scene from the original 1977 film, which showcased a diverse range of beings. It should come as no surprise, then, that del Toro's Star Wars endeavor revolved around one of the most grotesque and infamous aliens in the entire galaxy: Jabba the Hutt.

In an interview with Collider, del Toro revealed some of the details behind the canceled movie, expressing his disappointment to lose it, just as the fans likely are right now. "We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was extremely happy," he shared, before lamenting the ultimate cancellation of the project. "We were engaged in a lot of productive work, but unfortunately, it's not my property and not my monetary investment. Consequently, it became one of the many screenplays that never came to fruition. At times, I feel bitter about it, but there are also times when I don't. Ultimately, I always turn to my team and say, 'Good practice, guys. Good practice. We managed to design a fantastic world and create incredible content. We have also learned invaluable lessons.'"

The man behind the enchanting paranormal romance film, The Shape of Water, appears to maintain a practical outlook, despite his involvement in the Jabba the Hutt tale. Del Toro expressed, "Gratitude should always prevail in our lives. There is always something to learn from whatever life throws our way. So, I have faith in the universe. When something doesn't happen, I question it. I engage in self-reflection and ask myself, 'Why did it not happen?' The more we swim against the current of life, the more uncertain our destination becomes."

While del Toro's recent adaptation of Pinocchio showcased unexpected warmth, his body of work tends to lean towards darker themes. Considering the impressive achievement of Tony Gilroy's masterful Andor series, it is undeniably captivating to ponder what the acclaimed director of Pan's Labyrinth could bring to the Star Wars universe. Regrettably, circumstances did not align in this instance. However, given the franchise's remarkable history, it would be wise to refrain from proclaiming "never."
